Howdy!

Is there a difference in Body Shape between MIM and MIA bodies?

I'm not worried about the tummy cut, arm rest or the type of timber used. I'm after the body shape, thickness and neck pocket details.

Thanks in advance gang! :D

Andy

Hi Andy: I'm away from my stat sheets at present but whenever I get the opportunity I take measurements of guitars for data type purposes. So...:

I went into it a tiny bit in the opening scenes and later on the Burnt Strat thread, comparing that MIM bod Nick sent me with my MIA. I found on that one at least that the output jack cavity was in a significantly different place on the MIM and there were very slight differences in the body outline. On the other hand, the neck pocket was exactly the same depth (17 mm from memory) on those and every other Strat I've ever measured, and the MIM's pup cavities were the same depth too (can't recall that one off-hand). And the crucial distance from the back of the neck pocket to the front of the bridge cavity are identical too.

You are well aware that pickup routes vary from model to model, let alone factory to factory. No need to go into that further here, I presume?

Oh, and the thickness of that MIM was exactly the same as US models too - and for that matter the same as a mid-'90s Squier body I have too. That last is contrary to popular rumour: we often hear that Squiers are thinner, and perhaps they were once upon a time. But not for a long while, at any rate.

Just for reference, here's the innards of the 2005 MIA I'm talking about:

I've got tons more measurements and such at home which I can let you have when I get back there on Monday if it would help?

Now then. Where's this studio "in the West Country" where you and Uncle Thang plan to record? Anywhere near where I am right this minute, I wonder...?

Cheers - C

I haven't actually measured but I do have a couple of MIMs and a MIA and to the naked eye they appear identical in shape, thickness, and contour. Side by side they are the same. With regard to the Squier mentioned earlier, the Bullet and Affinity series have a slightly thinner body but the other models are the same as the U.S. and Mexican made Strats.

Hi ray: yes indeed - thank you! :D

It wasn't at all what I went into the shop for that day. But as soon as I set eyes upon it I was physically incapable of leaving without that little honey over my shoulder...

Ceri & 188vette, thanks for the info. :D

Ceri, now you mention it, I do remember that bit in your thread regarding the jack cavity. That and the pickup cavity routing is not a problem for me but I would be very interested to hear more about the difference in body shape however slight it may be.

I totally agree with ray-tard, the grain on that Sienna Sunburst is very pleasing to the eye. A fine specimen indeed. 8)

Thanks again.

Andy

Making some more templates, by any chance? :D

I'll dig you out some more info when I'm back in town. Though there's plenty of others here that can lay a MIM over a MIA and spot any differences...

Thanks Ceri, much appreciated! :D

Oooh! Forgot to mention, the Sandpit Studio is in Bath at the moment but I believe the guys are in the process of building a new one so its currently in temporary accommodation.
