Indeed. Patrick Sims in the US posted on this very Forum for a while. For example here, where he first looked in to explain that he was not to be confused with the other (also excellent) custom builder and painter, Martin Sims in the UK:

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... hp?t=28878

I guess you can't have too many Sims custom painting guitars. Though any more of them and we'll have to call it Sims City...

BTW, I notice ORCRiST's spitfire Strat currently is to be seen on Patrick Sims' home page. Quite right too! :D

I thought a lowely squire DID get Excalibur!

Oh wait, I think I'm confusing it with the Disney movie "The Sword In The Stone".

PS. Beautiful guitar so far, can't wait to see it finished.

Oh dear, I mustn't keep posting these. But just one more...

The latest archaeological research somewhere in the heart of England has unearthed surprising new details on the story:

I can verify it is certainly just like that whenever I visit Avalon...

That guy gets some mixed reviews. Stuff never being done, people never getting bodies back, excessive wait times. Some say great work, others say not so great. Mainly Ibanez owners.

Seeing that paintwork I can see why it took 8 months. The guy is obviously a perfectionist that wouldn't add the next stage till the first had fully dried.

You're quite right. I was very leery after I first sent the body off back in March after all the things I'd read. I basically called him and asked about all the bad reviews I'd read and we talked and I felt better afterwards. The eight months covers some SNAFU's on his part (not his fault per sa, just things that happen during any complex painting process), and some delays due to me wanting to alter or add a thing or two during the project. I did get the sense of him being a perfectionist, I'm the same way, so I just chilled and let him work cause the last thing I wanted is to rush anything.

Ok, more pics!

First off let me say this is a very expensive project (for me anyways). I'm no collector, and I know Strats in particular command ridiculous prices. I could have easily bought a Custom Shop strat for the amount I've spent on constituant parts (and the guitar is obviously not finished yet), I only mention the 'funds' issue at all (this is about love, money be damned) because of this: Ruthenium.

http://schaller-electronic.com/hp4750/R ... haller.htm

Image

To quote: "Ruthenium is an extremely hard, shiny metal and is found in association with platinum ores. It is very rare; no more than 120 kilograms are produced per year. This accounts for the high cost of ruthenium; it is more expensive than both gold and platinum."

I didn't set out wanting to use anything expensive or exotic, its all about the looks. Once I saw it, I knew I had to have it for this guitar. Out of all the parts a electric guitar requires, the hardware was the very first thing I bought for this project... and its been the hardest thing to get.

Back in January, when I first discovered this rare metal from Schaller and I knew I had to have it, I began my search. When I first started researching Ruthenium it was (is) a 'black-hole' on the 'Net. Other than Schaller itself, a german-only Schaller dealer, and sunglasses coated with Ruthenium on Ebay I found no retail or sales outlets of any kind. After I initally contact Schaller in Germany they directed me to Allparts. After trading emails with Allparts (who had NO CLUE) what I was on about - they responded with a price list of all the hardware I wanted costing over $800 (we're talking a Floyd Rose and locking tuners here) oh, and a minimum three month wait.

Unacceptable.

So, long story long - I ended up dealing directly with CEO and owner of Schaller himself. An international bank transfer and a month later (I found out one does not use PayPal for tidy sums and international corporations) - I had this:

Image

I'll throw another image in the mix. This is the body before it left to be painted (obviously), I have the pickguard messing around with test fittings. You can see the Ruthenium trem, humbucker mounting rings and control knobs (again taken indoors, at night with a flash):
Image
I should mention that this pickguard will NOT be used, and at this stage I plan to use conventional strat knobs instead of the Ruthenium ones once everything is done.

Once again, those pics don't do them justice. Some of you may be asking: "Self, that IS a cool color, but its just a trem." Well you'd be right.

However... Ruthenium has some very interesting properties that working musicians might love. First and foremost being, whats wrong with most cool "looking" hardware choices? They fade, tarnish, and otherwise discolor - and rapidly when in contact with the acidic sweat of hard rocking guitarists!

Ruthenium does not and will not. And I quote: "At room temperatures, ruthenium keeps its shiny, metallic surface and does not tarnish. Acids cannot damage it when it is deprived of oxygen. Ruthenium plating stands up to extreme mechanical demands and – especially interesting for musicians – it is surprisingly resistant to sweat and other chemical damage."

So I now have all my hardware in INDESTRUCTABLE Adamanti...er, Ruthenium. But really, in the end it just looks SO COOL. It interplays and changes in the light constantly, its quite mesmerizing actually.

Ok, thats it for now!

Interesting, ORC! First time I heard about that stuff. So is the hardware just Ruthenium-plated or solid Ruthenium?

Nice colour! I bet it harmonises well with the body! cool!

Now entering a search for info on Ruthenium,

Cheers mate!

It's only plated. I can't imagine the cost of a trem machined out of a metal more rare than platinum or gold, well over $1000 just for the trem I'd wager!

It does match the body nicely, even moreso than I knew it would. I was test fitting the tremolo last night and immediately saw a nice match with the way Patrick painted the exhaust manifold (as the manifold itself contains many varying subtle metallic hues), and the color of the Ruthenium - a very happy happenstance! :)

What can I say, I'm utterly speechless.

Rare metal maiden spitfire strat.

I really hope Mr Murray looks at his facebook comments and sees this.

I can't imagine how happy that alone would make you Orcrist or DM himself.

That guitar looks worth the UK-USA airfare just to look at it.

I did check out his Facebook page, unfortunetly it doesn't seem to be really 'his' (rather, name only). From what I know of him he's rather low-key and laid back, not the sort at all to be posting the kind of comments I've seen. Besides, I doubt even my efforts could tear him away from a luxurious Hawaiian golf course!

Believe it or not, I've briefly thought about packing it all up and asking (nay, begging) Mr. Ceri to assemble the thing. Its not that I couldn't do it myself, its just that because its so expensive I cannot afford to mess anything up. I'm crying inside at the thought of drilling holes in the body for things like the pickguard and strap lock screws, etc. I mean, it would be fitting for a guitar representing an English band, a symbol of English defiance and sacrifice, to after all be assembled by an Englishman in England!

But I believe I am determined to give it a go, at least as much as I dare. We shall see!

What I suggest is that you make good use of masking tape.

Place masking tape over where you're going to drill a hole. Mark your spot on the masking tape. Start with a small drill bit to make a pilot hole then up the size of the drill bit.
Also I like to set the depth I'm going to drill at by putting tape round the drill bit as a visual aid to depth. Soon as the tape reaches the body, it's time to stop.

Place your pickguard and use a pin or a nail punch (don't hit it hard) to mark your holes and do the same.

Masking tape is great for stopping drill slips.

What kind of pickguard are you going to put on it?

this would look cool, cut to fit. Dunno if it's a good material (metal) but the looks would work well.
