I just got an American Standard and found out from Fender that it has the Deltatone feature. I know about the American Deluxe with the S-1 switch, but I'm unfamilar with the Deltatone. The little bit of info that I have been able to find hasn't helped much. Does the Deltatone work all the time or is the some kind of on-off switch?
Thanks

The tone pot that is shared by the middle and bridge pickup is a no-load pot. When you turn that tone knob to "10" it is out of circuit. You feel a little indent when turning it to 10, so yes it is kind of like an on/off swtich. Bypassing the tone pot gives a teeny boost to high frequencies. Some people may hear more details, I don't notice much of a difference especially when playing with a band and other noises are going on. From 9 to 1 the tone knob works like any other tone control.

The tone control for the neck pickup is a regular pot.

Sure getting a lot of action on this question lately. Doesn't the all purpose owner's manual have a paragraph on this?

Can you clear one last thing up for me, when is the Deltatone on, is it when you have the tone knob turned to 10 or is it on before 10,(1 to 9).
Thanks,
Lile

The Deltatone system is not something you turn "ON" or "OFF". It's just Fender's fancy name for a no-load tone pot. Image
Like I said above, turn the tone knob to 10 and the pot is out of circuit. From 9 to 1 it's in the circuit and works like a regular tone pot. I hope that helps explain it.

Funny thing is, I have been using Fender no-load pots for quite a number of years in Strat and Tele builds. Then I believe it was Niki who explain to me about the Delta Tone...wow such a fancy name for a simple thing! I was thinking Detla Tone had to be a special pickup, with special wiring to make the guitar sound like it was for playing blues from the Delta land!

I have always like the idea of being able to have the pickup being run straight through with no resistance from the pot. Maybe it was somewhat psychological, but pickups seem to respond better when they are not choked down, that is, for playing some types of lead.......

FYI: I remind the Forum that the current and priot issues of Premier Guitar contain informative articles on the Fender TBX and the next issue will cover the Clapton Midboost. Access www.premierguitar.com for the current, and archives for the prior.
