Hi guys,

I have recently been looking a little deeper into this guitar I bought a couple years ago. And I have a couple questions that I cannot seem to find any answers for anywhere online. When I first bought it, I knew it was a very early Am Std. judging by the E46 serial most likely a '87. maybe even '88. It has all the features of a basic Am Std. 22 fret, nickel plated 2 point trem, dual string trees, swimming pool route, etc...

I decided to go ahead an pull the neck looking for a build date, or any kind of information that might be stamped there. But inside the pocket, or on the neck there is virtually nothing. A couple of round blue "dot" stickers, and the rectangular sticker on the neck itself has what appears to be a red "apple smiley-face" no initials or anything else. No date on the neck, nothing... So question 1, has anyone ever seen this? I have looked at "e4" necks on ebay, looking specifically for something like this and none of them have anything close, most have dates on the neck and almost always some form of initials.

It also has a "Fender lace sensor" dually in the bridge position, which I figured was an upgrade done somewhere along the line before I got it. But upon changing the pick guard, knobs, and pickup covers to new black ones (I always liked the look of black on a burst, rather than "parchment" it came with) I noticed that the solder joints connecting the lace sensor appear to be every bit as old, and clean as all the rest of the connections. Which leads to question 2. Is it possible this was some kind of special order or something? Were red dually "Fender lace sensors" even being made at the time? I have only ever seen them on one other guitar (an Ultra I had a while back). The last image is of the back of the FLS.

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated...
Someone should write a book about these very early Am. Std's. What serials were put on what years, or production numbers for those years that could be used to extrapolate dates etc... But then again, that would make it too easy...lol

I have the same thing on a rosewood neck Strat Plus, E47 serial #, the stamp, some red marks (no smiley face), and no date. Show us some more pics, what kind of nut? could be a Plus body that someone put a loaded pick guard on from an Ultra or a Strat Standard Plus, which had Lace pups with regular nut and tuners.

Hi,
The nut has been changed to a brass one at some point in time, so I can only assume it was just a standard nut, not a roller nut like a plus/ultra would have. The pickguard on it is loaded with the standard everyday pickups in the middle, and neck positions, they are not the lace sensors that would be there if it was an plus pickguard. Nothing on the guitar makes me think it's anything other than a early Am. std. I'm going home for the evening but I may take a few more pics tomorrow. thanks.

Seems like it's an early American Standard that someone added the Dually Red Lace to at some point down the line. I don't recall either the red-logo Laces or Duals until say 1989 or even early 1990 (the red logo Lace on the Strat Plus Deluxe; the Dual reds on the Tele Plus/Tele Plus Deluxe). I could be wrong, but I don't think they had anything but Gold, Silver and Blue logo Lace Sensors in 1987/88.

Do you have any other picts of this guitar? I am wondering about the trem posts. Does it have brass ferrel inserts that the post screw into, or do the posts simply just screw right into the wood. (see below). If it has this feature and all the other features you mentioned, it is most likely a very early American Standard Strat. I would like to see the nut and the serial number. Forsure it would not have come with a Lace Dually as those were not sued by Fender, especially in the style you showed, until 1990. Almost all the very early 86-88 American Strats had plain white pickguards as well.
