What type of cutters do you use to clip strings during string changes? I have a pair of cutters from Sears that haven't lasted more than 10 string changes. They have already noticeably dulled and won't cut the string cleanly. I'd like something that allows me to cut close to the tuner and will stay sharp. Any suggestions?

The cutters that come with the Cruz Tools Groove Tech guitar maintenance kit are just great and are made of extremely hard steel with comfortable rubberized handles. They kit contains everything you need for routine guitar upkeep like allen keys, feeler gauges, screwdrivers etc. the kit costs about $50 but is well worth it.

I have a pair of simple wire cutters I've used for years and years--they've lasted--just go to a good hardware store and buy a decent pair of wire cutters.

I use the Planet Waves Pro-Winder String Winder/Cutter.

It's cheap, works like a charm, and winds strings to boot. I have a couple of these, that I've been using for several years. They stay tight, and cuts clean.

I generally use regular wire stripper/cutters from radio shack until I get to the B and high E strings. For those I have a set of toe-nail clippers set aside for just cutting those strings. They get beat-up after a while, but easy and cheap to replace.

I normally use a Thermal Dynamics 35 Amp Plasma Cutter with a DiLithium Flux Capacitating Defribrillator. I find that this rig works best for cutting my strings and leaves no metal shavings that could upset my tone fairys (it is a little known fact that metal shavings will get into the tone fairies panties and cause all kinds of chaffing). :D

Best answer in thread.....next to the flux capacitor defibrillator plasma cutter of course.

I have a simple pair of wire cutters that I picked up at a hardware store. Get a good strong pair that is made for cutting something thicker than your low E string and you'll be good to go for life.

Darn... I missed the Thermal Dynamics 35 Amp Plasma Cutter with a DiLithium Flux Capacitating Defribrillator Stupid Deal of the Day.

My GAS causes chaffing in my wife's panties (and that's all the chaffing one man can stand).

Buy a pair of Sears CRAFTSMAN wire cutters. Not only do they last for a very long time but once they begin to dull, you can exchange them for a brand new pair. I only bought the one pair over 40 years ago and since then, continue to exchange as and when necessary. I do this with several Craftsman tools, I may add. Bring them back to any Sears store which has Craftsman tools within, no questions asked. As a matter of fact, now that K-Mart sells Craftsman too, the same would apply here.

I'm tell ya......

Every pair of diagonal cutters that I've found that can reliably cut the low E string (plus my bass strings) cost more than $10, AND won't wind your strings.

The Planet Wave tool is hands down my most used tool that I use (well.... besides my tuner). Like I said, the cutter is good enough to reliably cut the strings on my Bass.

Trust me; buy it, use it, and if it's not the best tool you have ever used bring it back.
(OK, I just made that last part up. You probably won't get anywhere if you mention that some bloke on the Internet said you could bring it back)

Still wait for the DiLithium Flux Capacitating Defribrillator to go on Stupid Deal of the Day....... That, or an extra large bottle of Talcum Powder to deal with my Wife's chaffing problem. :D
