Hello,

Please help me identify this Stratocaster. It belongs to my father who has bought it more than 15 years ago and he wants to sell it. I want to buy it my self and keep it in the family and so I would like to identify this and let him know how much it is worth.

He says there are no serial number as far as he can see.

Here are three images he sent me:

I can't tell from those pics myself. I'm sure someone else is more knowledgeable. The S/N should be on the headstock somewhere though.

It's a 70's strat, so the serial would have been on the backplate. However, it must be a replacement backplate because the serial number is not there. There should be a serial number on the heel of the neck which would be clearly visible once you unscrew the neck from the body. This is the only way to find the serial. Also, there might be some more information on the underside of the pickguard. By checking the marks on the body cavities you can confirm the authenticity of the brand insofar as the body piece. The neck is the easiest part becase of the serial. Good luck and be careful.

It should be worth around the $3,000 range. Not sure how the modified parts that I can see (backplate and synth access) will devalue it though.

It's a 70's Strat for sure. I have a couple, here's what to look for, and what I can tell from the pics. The quickest method of dating it would be to remove the neck, and look at the date stamped on the heel. If you don't want to do that here's some info. In late 1976 Fender stopped putting serial numbers on the neck plates and placed them on the headstock so look under the word Fender on the headstock and you should see a S/N. If the pole pieces on the pick ups are all the same height it's another indication that it's 1975 or newer. The mods make it less valuable from a collector standpoint but if you want it as a player who gives a darn.

$1500 to $2000 on Ebay in a "good" market. Get your Dad to give you a deal on it.

Don't even think about offering your Dad that much money for that guitar.

Haggle with him a little bit. Offer $200 ($50 down, $50 a month, for 3 months)

Work up from there.

I'm sure your Dad loves you. He might give you a break.

Good luck.

For sure Bro, my post and price guesstimate was for if Dad wanted to sell it on Ebay or elsewhere. Heck if you want the guitar he better sell it to you for way less. You're his SON.

If pops want's to sell it to you for more than a brand new Made in Mexico Strat tell him (respectfully) to "kick rocks"

Are you sure he has the right number? It is really low. It might just be a part number or perhaps :( a fake.

It is certainly a '70s type strat, but it might not be a strat from the '70s.

Those pictures aren't good enough to tell.

You will have to take it apart and get some numbers to accurately date it. Look for date codes on the pots. Look for code number on the neck.

This web site:
http://www.provide.net/~cfh/fender.html
will help you decode all of the magic numbers you find on the parts.

No serial number is bad news.
