Just thought I would share this article I found about the finishing process of Fender guitars. This is good info to clear up a lot of the questions about the finishes Fender uses and some technical info that might help the DIY'ers. Note that the article is from 2003 so it describes the old acrylic lacquer finish of the first generation Highway 1 (it's nitro now).

Interesting to know that Fenders lays down 15 mils of poly undercoat, 3 coats of tint, and 3 coats of clear.
