Who's got one? Let's see 'em! I just acquired this guitar through a friend. I have yet to have it in my hands, but it appears to be a 27-4400 (1 humbucking pickup, 1 volume, Schaller "System I" tremolo, rosewood fingerboard, 25.5" scale length, side mounted output jack). Unfortunately, either the headstock's been sanded or the neck has been replaced. If anybody's got more info on this guitar, let me know! I'd love to be educated further.

How are you sure it's a Fender at all?

Reasonable question. I guess I'll know better on Sunday. The person who's giving it to me said it was a Fender, it has Fender hardware, it's the right color and specs for the guitar and the year. It looks a lot like this one:

The only real difference I can see is the finish on the headstock and the locking nut. However, the nut did vary from year to year. Some of them even had a "clamp down" style locking nut (similar to a current Yamaha design).

Because not everyone out there is a crook. There is a lot of distrust on this forum.

Not only that, but it's being given to me for free anyway. Why would there be any reason to lie about it? The person who currently has possession of it is unsure of the guitar's history too though. However, it seems like an odd guitar to clone so closely so I would assume it would be a real Fender. Why make a knock-off of a guitar that's not worth much to begin with? I can see the neck being a replacement though. I'll post more detailed photos when I have the guitar in my hands.

The neck could be a Warmoth. If it is you make out like a bandit. Warmoth has good stuff. I have 2 Warmoth Strats that I swear by.

I've been playing guitar for the better part of 25 years and these 2 are, without a doubt in my mind, the best guitars I've ever played. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not against Fender in any way, shape or form. Hehe, if I was I wouldn't be here. But these are some fine instruments. I have custom shop level guitars at a fraction of the price. And best part is that everything on there is *exactly* what *I* wanted in a guitar.

but I have to say that my Clapton Strat is also one guitar that I will never sell.

One other thing, I have to agree with you that it's highly doubtful that someone would go to the trouble of making a fake of something that isn't worth much to begin with. I don't question too much unless something is really funky. I'd be more suspicious of someone selling a Custom Shop than I would someone selling a MIM.

MIJ in this case, but yes. Agreed.

The only interesting historical bit of information about this guitar that I've dug up is that the Contemporary Stratocaster was the first non-US made guitar to carry the Fender name without "Squier" on the headstock. However, perhaps that makes it more of a sad moment in time despite the fact that Japanese Fenders are exceptionally good instruments. End of an era and beginning of a new one, I suppose. Good old 80's and outsourcing.

I haven't played for 25 years yet, but I've owned probably upwards of 40 guitars and played many, many more (I've worked in six guitar shops). The Japanese made Fenders have been some of my favorite guitars.

There are fake Squiers out there. And the reason for the mistrust is how many times I've seen people get ripped off and how many fakes, most famous here is probably vinnypop's debacle.

If it's free, rock on.

I would like to apologize if my original comment came off as being spiteful or douchey. I didn't mean it like that. But I stand by it. It seems like every time someone posts up something they found the talk immediately goes to it being a fake. I'm sure there are bad ones to be found but let's be real, I'm positive the good deals found on Ebay, for example, far outweigh the crooked ones. I've bought several guitars off of Ebay and have never had a problem. One guitar did show up in worse condition than what was in the description but it was mainly cosmetic. A little elbow grease and determination on my part got it into tip top shape.

We're just really cautious here because we have seen friends ripped off of literally thousands of dollars from fake and deceptive ebay deals.

Going back to the original intent of the post...

This is my latest, MIJ with a Kahler USA bridge and nut - I really like the way this one plays and sounds.

This was one I decided to mod a little bit (the previous owner did as well, adding the LSR roller nut). I refinished it all myself (it's the first guitar I have ever really tried this to), added some custom electrical touches, and Carvin TBH pickups. Very versatile tones.

Refin looks good! I suspect those pickups are pretty ballsy. Nice guitars!
