A friend of mine was Walsh's roommate at Kent State and was his soundman for many years as well as an engineer on Hotel California. Little-known fact-Boston's debut record, which my friend (Bruce Hensal) also was an engineer on, was sprung from Tom Scholz's obsessive love for the James Gang and Walsh's guitar sound (what's not to love about that?) Scholz was put in touch with Bruce when he wanted to know how Walsh got his sound. The rest as they say...Walsh did use a variety of guitars, most often Teles and Les Pauls-I read that he used a 335 a lot in the James Gang (yeah!!) A lot of the sound was a Champ, lots of overdubs with slight tweaks on the sound, and Leslie speakers.

Man very cool! Joe seems like an awesome guy just by the way he entertains...i loved that 50th anniversary show i really wish i could've gone to that...looked top notch

Joe actually looks better than he did in 2004; I believe he finally quit drinking in between 2004 and now. At the end of 3+ hours of show he still ran all around the stage while playing "Life's Been Good To Me" on 10/16 - it was the last song of the 2hr 15 minute second set (they did a 1 hour 1st set and followed the second set up with 3 encores). Very few Fenders this time around from Joe.

Steuart Smith (the replacement for Don Felder) did use some very tastey vintage Strats and Teles during the show (as well as many EBMM guitars).

Glenn Frey for electrics was all Gibson - his old modded LP Junior (with an added dogear neck pickup), a '59 LP Reissue (looked too new to be a real 'burst), and on one tune a Moderne reissue.

Don Henley has given up playing a drum kit and played guitar most of the night. His only electric was 70s Tele Custom (I couldn't tell if it was the real thing, a CS, or an MIM reissue). Henley did play some congas and some other percussion playable standing up.

Ohhh Joe Walsh gear! Now this is something I know a LOT about - as I formed and play his parts in an Eagles tribute band and he is my guitar hero and favorite guitarist and a member of my favorite band. :) I do LOTS of research on him and the Eagles gear.

As far as Strat pups, Joe typically uses Gold Lace Sensors and Custom Shop Seymour Duncans. I mainly see him with Laces though. He really seems to like them a lot.

Almost all of the James Gang stuff was a Champ (Tele and Champ on Funk 49). Rocky Mountain Way was a Champ. The song Hotel California was a Tele and a Tweed Deluxe, which is the same amp Felder used with a Les Paul for his parts of the solo. Some have thought this was a Champ, but it was a 5E3 Tweed Deluxe cranked. Joe's song "Life's Been Good" was a Les Paul and a Blackface Twin Reverb for Joe's parts but also had other guitars and amps layered in.

Joe has been a long time Fender amp guy, playing everything from Tweed Champs to Blackface Twin, Super, and Deluxe Reverbs, to Tweed Bassmans, Tweed Twin and Tweed Deluxes. He's the reason I bought my '65 TRRI for my tribute band. He's played pretty much every kind of Fender amp but really seems to like the Blackface era amps best, especially the '65 Twin Reverb but also the Super Reverb as well. There is an interview from like the late 70s saying his favorite guitar rig of all time is a '59 Les Paul through Fender BF Super Reverbs connected to an Echoplex. I have a '65 SRRI on my amps-to-get list for next year. :D

Henley has had some knee trouble and has been taking a break from drumming but I hear he's back on the drums now. His Tele looks to me like a MIM 72RI Tele Deluxe. If it is the one I'm thinking of, it is brown but with a regular Tele neck instead of a Strat 70s maple style neck and headstock.

I figured it was an RI; it looked to clean to be a real one (unless it had been in storage since it was purchased) but I never saw a close-up of the back of the headstock to see if it was a CS. We were in the upper bowl of the arena but close to the stage (and very close to the video screen on our side of the stage) so I got some great close-up looks at most of the guitars.

The concert we went to was on October 16 of this year; they didn't even set up a kit for him that night.

Yeah the 16th would have been when he was still having knee trouble. I think he played drums on the last tour date for this year in the US, because his knee had healed. I'm not sure if he had surgery or what, as it was never told what had happened to it.
