Hello to all this is my first post and glad to be here at the Fender Forums!

I have a US Standard strat Olympic white i recently got thru Zzsounds.

since i couldn't afford to buy a signature mayer strat i decided to just modify my axe a bit.

I have gotten ideas on how to get the Mayer sound on his pickups, and i have two choices..

one is this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/big-dipper-tone-cus ... 27b37ef5a1

the other is:
http://www.kleinpickups.com/p-77-s-5-sc ... ckups.aspx

Are these the best alternatives i can get based on my budget of $150-$200?

Thanks for all the help!

i'd say define your OWN sound, don't go for a "John Mayer" sound. Don't be drawn to them just because John mayer uses them and think that by installing them you'll get the same "sound" he does.

or

get a set of Kinman MK-III or the Kinman Blues set for truly jaw dropping tone.

I have a couple questions:

What kind of amp do you use?

What kind of amp does John Mayer use?

My suggestions:

Save the $200 towards a better amp.

Lower the pickups. A lot.

Mostly play using the neck pickup.

Good point sir! :D

I do have a Laney 30 Watt amp.

How do i lower the stock pups?

Will it really be as close as sound to the Mayer pickups?

Just for a straight question, what do you think is the best of the two? the ebay pickups or the klien ones? just to give me an idea

I would definitely check out the Buzkut pickups. Here is a good sound clip with them in use.

If you are looking for more of the Mayer TB1 tone (the actual Black One, not the new release with the Big Dippers in them) then I would check out the Jazzy Cats by Klein

Between the two options that you presented though, I would go with the S-5's. Also remember, a lot of Mayers tone come from his pedals (Katana, Zendrive, TS) and his hands. But I think with a nice guitar and nice pups, you will get close. You can then create your own sound building off JM's. It's not like his sound is all his own, the Big Dippers sound quite a bit like Texas Specials, just scooped, which is more of an SRV sound. SRV built his tone off of Hendrix...etc, etc.

Plus 1 on the Kinman Blues btw.
