hifolks, im seeking some advise on buying a strat. i own a 93 special edition strat in vanilla with custom shop wound texas specials, gold hardware, pearloid pick guard etc. i have owned this since 93 as it was bought as new and is from a run of 200.

it is a beauty to look at and to play.

i would like a guitar loaded with the EMG DG20 ACTIVE SYSTEM that david gilmour uses, but instead of changing my existing strat as i want to keep this as bought, i would like to purchase a vintage 57 reissue and have the emg DG20 pickup system fitted.

david used this guitar during the delecate sound of thunder years, and the model was i believe A 1986 57 reissue in candy apple red.

my question is this, looking on the fender web, it does not show this colour available in its listing for the vintage 57 reissue, so does znyone know if i could ask the custom shop to provide one in this colour? and also to add gold hardware etc. also would they also be able to fit the EMG DG20 system as well which i know comes already wired to a pearloid scratcplate.

any suggestions welcome.

i had considered buying the DG black strat, but i prefer candy apple red

regard bob

I think the custom shop would build you a red 57RI and I believe they would also fit the electronics you desire.

You have to go to a CS showcase dealer to discuss particulars, price, and what the CS will and wont do.

If you are okay with used, you could piece the guitar together with pieces from ebay. I have done that a couple of times. As long as you know what you are looking at, you can basically plug and play with genuine Fender parts.
Here is a red body on ebay right now:

Good Luck.

Well it comes in the colour you want, has a modern radius, cellulose finish, gentle V to the rear of the neck.

thanks, i will take a look, i havent actually tried a V neck as my 93 special has a C radius neck anyway the hotrod is probably cheaper i would imagine? not that is really the issue in this case, but it has been suggested that it is the closest you will get to what gilmour used, not that i expect to sound like him of coarse

More expensive than the AVRI, less expensive than a time machine.

I think Fender last made the AV '57 in candy apple red in either 1998 or 1999; I'm pretty sure Fender did carry over that color when they updated the American Vintage series in 1998. You might be able to find a used one; they were in production from 1982-1984 (when CBS owned Fender) and again from 1982 until either 1998 or 1999 (they were out of production here in the USA while FMIC built their new factory). It's worth trying out both the AV '57 and the Hot Rod '57; as others have said if you're used to modern necks the Hot Rod will likely feel more comfortable to you.

Gilmour's candy red Strat was a 1983 "US Vintage" '57 (as CBS called the series back then). I have a 1984 Guitar Player magazine where Gilmour discusses the "About Face" album; he mentions going to the UK Fender importer's warehouse, playing all of the '57 and '62 reissues they had, and took away the candy apple red '57, a vintage white '57 (used on the About Face tour and the Paul McCartney "Give My Regards to Broad Street" project), a Fiesta Red '57, and a Fiesta Red '62.

The orignal "Black Strat" currently has the neck from the vintage white '57 on it; the Custom Shop Gilmour signature model neck is copied from this specific neck.

Or your could get a Jimmie Vaughan artist model as it is a MIM model it is reasonably priced and all aspects of it are 57 body soft v neck that doesn't feel tremendously different than a modern C and a vintage spaced trem,it has tex mex pickups that most people think are fine.cheers

Thanks John and Wingman.

Theres a CAR 57RI about 30 miles from me. I really didn't know they ended with the old factory. I wondered why it was commanding more than usuall. Norman who owns the shop is usually bang on with his pricing.

I also didn't know the JV was based on the 57. I liked the look of the JV since the mid-late 90's. The right shade of white, with everything else looking right too. At the right price. I'll have to check one now, it's been atleast 12 years I've put it off for.

Here I was thinking I didn't have GAS till I read this. Cheers lads.

Well now this is a surprise, I've been looking to do a Gilmour EMG project and love the neck on my 57AVHR, but didn't want to spend that kind of money on another 57 AV hot rod. This is some handy info.
