Jeff, will do. As a matter of fact, I really have to go lie down now.

Thats very neat wiring! sadly I understand none of it

Forgive me if this has been asked before, or if even it has been asked somewhere else (I'm still getting the hang of searching/using forums!)

In simple terms, am I right in thinking that an S-1 switch basically gives you additional pickup combinations at the touch of a button, therefore additional sounds you wouldn't usually get on a strat? I don't mean to hi-jack the thread just I think I would enjoy it all the more if I understood a bit better :)

Get well soon!

You have a phenomenal eye for detail!

Why, thankyou. :D

One doesn't often get the chance to study the work of a Pro. When one does, one pays very close attention to the details. I very much appreciate getting a peek under the hood of a Martian Strat. There's a lot to learn from those very nice, detailed pics you've posted.

If I get some free time this weekend I'll see about sorting out a thread on the Super Switch. Might be able to sort something out for Tired guitarist too.

Cheers!

Andy

Moving right along:

If you look at an American Strat body fitted with the tilt neck gizmo, you'll see an outright jig holder hole in the neck pocket and and additional hole housing a disk which surrounds the allen screw for the tilt neck:

Image

Well, modern technology is all well and good but these holes make for lack of vibration between the neck and the body and that little tiny allen screw which pokes the neck away from the body is literally a standoff, keeping the neck away from the body as well at it's most critical point: Where the heel of the neck joins the "U" of the neck pocket in the body. So, for optimum sound transference, I continue to mount the neck the old fashioned way, with a shim and 'neutralize' the allen tilt neck screw.

This is the shim which was installed in all Fender bodies/necks right up until the tilt neck came into being with the three bolt system:

Image

Here's a how it is/was fitted:

Image

I never sat down and outright measured the thickness of theses shims but I can tell you they are the exact thickness of two business cards, one on top of the other. Luckily for me, I found a length of cardboard this thickness and so, I just cut it to size and install it as shown above.

Just like how strings come over a bridge and are at a slight angle down towards the neck, so should the angle of the neck coming off the body be. Nothing extreme but it has to be there nonetheless. If not, action, intonation, etc. shall suffer.

Ever so slightly (use the side dots as your guide):

Now look on the opposite side for the tiniest of a lift:

Dig?

Always 'star' the backplate screws in, starting from one of the pair closest to the bridge.

Now we have a nice, snug body/neck joint properly angled where this guitar shall give plenty of acoustic sustain.

I was going going to go further tonight but as I've stated earlier I have a nasty virus and it has finally gotten the best of me for the evening. So, I'll be back tomorrow with more neat 'stuff'.

I love the color of that body with the maple neck!! 8) Going to be a Martian special for sure. A beautiful simplistic looking guitar with extras under the hood! Hope you get to feeling better soon my friend!!

Notice the beautiful soldering and wiring! :) There are no globs of solder burnt/smeared and tidy wiring. That's what a pro can do with the tools at hand!! A blowtorch and a jackhammer!!

Thanks to all for wishing me well, getting over this freakin' virus. I really wanted to complete the guitar before this weekend but my system has rather forcefully dictated otherwise. I truly apologize for the delay but the plain truth is, I'm just too physically drained. FWIW, I am starting to feel slightly better so I think it safe to predict that sometime over this weekend, I will definitely be able finish it. :D

We can't have the worlds only ET on the ropes. Don't worry about getting the guitar finished till your well.

I'd rather see you healthy than this guitar finished. Though idealy I want to see both

+1 What Niki said Martian.
The guitar will still be there when you get better.
Get some rest. If it's the same thing I had, it's over and done with in about 4 days. Rather have you rested and not making any unnecessary mistakes with the Golden Gate Soldering Iron.

Rest,
-T

Ditto! If it's viral, antibiotics are useless. Rest, fluids, meds for fever.
Chill out totally.
