Martian I like your claw-tamer. It's got the charm of a mammoth, but it's got charm! Any idea what such a thing would originally be meant for?

Looking forward to the wiring!

Wild, isn't it?

As a matter of fact, I do. It was used by the original owner for soldering terminal lugs onto cable leads for 440V electric motors used on sea ships.

As to the wiring, remember this?

Well, here's some shots of the real thing:

Image

Yep, it's all done. Those bits of tape are only to keep the wires in line so as to fit the pickguard on easily; there are no splices, etc. The only three wires left to be connected are the two to the jack and the one to the claw. I know you all want to know what's going to happen with the claw but unfortunately, my bedtime draws nigh. So, until tomorrow...

Nice job Mr. Martian! I used a 45W iron for my little project and had no problems soldering to the claw.

BTW - have you even seen the kudo's I've given you on my build thread (probably not your cup-o-tea I realize)? Well deserved too, I might add - and we even stopped for the same reasons! :)

Can't wait to see more unfold...

Well, you are correct with Maiden not being my cup-o-tea and so I must admit, I hadn't read the thread until just now. (I hang my head in shame. )

I thank you for your kind words and must compliment you as well on the quality of your work. Your craftsmanship is a breath of fresh air. See, over the decades, I've seen and/or have had to 'clean up' so many projects, good bad and indifferent that in my world, such things are simply, "Go" or "No-Go". Meaning, it is either a truly professional job in every facet of the build including the quality of the components or it is as the Classical Guitar maker whom I learned from would constantly say about ANY assembly line guitar, "Basura!"

You project is clearly a "GO", I heartily congratulate you on a job SUPER well done and truly hope the right people see it!

I dig!!! :D

I've completely given up on the idea of working out the superswitch. Been staring at one I have in the cupboard for ages now and just cant work it out,

I think driving that pneumatic drill spike soldering iron through it maybe the best solution I can come up with to it.

Oh mate you don't know the half of it. I've just spent all day wiring a pedal up. I actually had the circuit wired in in 30 minutes. It wouldn't work right though. After a day of headscratching, poking, probing and prodding. I just saw the mistake. A transistor wired the wrong way round.

Moving right along:

If you look at an American Strat body fitted with the tilt neck gizmo, you'll see an outright jig holder hole in the neck pocket and and additional hole housing a disk which surrounds the allen screw for the tilt neck:

Image

Well, modern technology is all well and good but these holes make for lack of vibration between the neck and the body and that little tiny allen screw which pokes the neck away from the body is literally a standoff, keeping the neck away from the body as well at it's most critical point: Where the heel of the neck joins the "U" of the neck pocket in the body. So, for optimum sound transference, I continue to mount the neck the old fashioned way, with a shim and 'neutralize' the allen tilt neck screw.

This is the shim which was installed in all Fender bodies/necks right up until the tilt neck came into being with the three bolt system:

Image

Here's a how it is/was fitted:

Image

I never sat down and outright measured the thickness of theses shims but I can tell you they are the exact thickness of two business cards, one on top of the other. Luckily for me, I found a length of cardboard this thickness and so, I just cut it to size and install it as shown above.

Just like how strings come over a bridge and are at a slight angle down towards the neck, so should the angle of the neck coming off the body be. Nothing extreme but it has to be there nonetheless. If not, action, intonation, etc. shall suffer.

Ever so slightly (use the side dots as your guide):

Image

Now look on the opposite side for the tiniest of a lift:

Image

Dig?

Always 'star' the backplate screws in, starting from one of the pair closest to the bridge.

Now we have a nice, snug body/neck joint properly angled where this guitar shall give plenty of acoustic sustain.

I was going going to go further tonight but as I've stated earlier I have a nasty virus and it has finally gotten the best of me for the evening. So, I'll be back tomorrow with more neat 'stuff'.

Thanks, Mike. That's a lot of years experience you're seeing there.

Here's the trick: Learn the mechanics of the switch first. If that fails, I'll lend you my Medieval Soldering Iron so to melt the entire switch into a molten pile of slop.

This will be sweet with the maple and vintage white finish. Nice job. Get rested!
