See now that is one thing I like. A good big tool. :D ooo eeeer missus.

Nah in all seriousness I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that I do prefer higher powered soldering irons. I used a 12watt for my amp and a 8watt for my pedals. However I found the less power to the iron, the longer I had to keep it on a component. Out came the old B&Q 40watt and I found I was getting less heat transfer to the components because I was barely touching anything.

Martian what did you do, use a boiler fillament onto a pneumatic breaker tip?

I've never had any issues with getting the solder to stick on a trem claw and agree the terminal lugs are not as good as a soldered joint. But are you really going to use that beast? I mean yeah, thats the tool you'd need to burn a hole in space time but on a trem claw? Your kidding right?

Very much looking forward to seeing some pics of you holding the camera in one hand and that Mololithic soldering iron in the in other!

Game on! :D

Edit: Oooh! This is my 1000th post. I am now a Professional Musician! Tis a shame pick status has no bearing on the outside world. Though thinking about it Nikininja is the exception to the rule. He actually is a Rock Lobster. :D

Some one gave it to me, kind of as a joke. Naturally, I wanted to see what it could do and so, when I was having a problem soldering on a pickup cover due to an extremely powerful ceramic magnet within the pickup, I pulled the beast out and fired it up. I won instantly and have used it for this purpose ever since. Then, instead of having to scrape up a new tremolo claw which is usually galvanized, I figured, I'd use it here too and of course, with instant success. These are the only two tasks I use it for.

First and foremost, congratulations!

I will use it only if a claw doesn't like my soldering gun. Depending on the individual claw, sometimes the gun works perfectly. Other times, it does make the solder stick firmly but the solder doesn't flow out like it should (even with pre-scraping). And although I know the joint is fine, it doesn't look professional. It is at this point that I bring on the 'heavy artillery". I do use it exclusively for soldering on pickup covers though.

Congrats, Andy! 50 points to you, Sir! 8)

Martian I like your claw-tamer. It's got the charm of a mammoth, but it's got charm! Any idea what such a thing would originally be meant for?

Looking forward to the wiring!

This shall most definitely be used when I solder the ground wire to the claw on this build!

Andy

Here is what I use to solder the wire onto that blasted trem claw!

Seeing both the soldering iron and blow torch brought back memories of working in my Dad's garage. He was an auto mechanic and I worked at his shop after school and full time in the summers. Those tools were used quite a number of times.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane!
I can see the use for that soldering quite easily...as Nik mentioned, these smaller ones just don't cut it when you know a more powerful one would heat things up faster and you wouldn't have to worry about heat transfer.

Wild, isn't it?

As a matter of fact, I do. It was used by the original owner for soldering terminal lugs onto cable leads for 440V electric motors used on sea ships.

As to the wiring, remember this?

Well, here's some shots of the real thing:

Yep, it's all done. Those bits of tape are only to keep the wires in line so as to fit the pickguard on easily; there are no splices, etc. The only three wires left to be connected are the two to the jack and the one to the claw. I know you all want to know what's going to happen with the claw but unfortunately, my bedtime draws nigh. So, until tomorrow...

Glad to give you a happy flashback!

As to my 'psycho iron', this is a clear cut case of, "Superior planning yields superior results!"

Well well well, I see some seriously clean soldering joints! Sweet! (whish I could do that. Ahhh, back to practising!)

And that golden nugget of a cap is also cute to look at - I'm sure it sounds great!

Cool! 8)

Truth is, I always use my 140 watt solder gun to put the wires on the trem block. Last time I used my dad's old torch was we warm up the motor on my car with is was about -25F one winter! I just let it run under the oil pan!......

Thank you and will do!

MAYBE tonight, I'll be able to do a bit more. Like I said, my day job leaves me pretty tired but now, I'm fighting a nasty virus too. Hey, why not? :(

Tonight, I shall make the parts, a guitar. I'll be bolting the neck on with a word about shimming the neck; installing the heads and strap locks and soldering up the jack and claw where hopefully I won't be needing this for the claw!
Image

As embarrassing as this is, per the picture above, I have that one nice, white Strat tone knob and the only other Strat knob I have is that nasty yellowish one. I just realized I don't have any other white Strat volume or tone knobs to go with this white one to complete a set for this guitar. Does anyone have a pair lying around they wouldn't mind parting with?

The knobs I can offer are not really usable, but if there is anything else you need let me know. I have a lot of stuff lying around.

Nevin, thank you!!

On the one hand, the chrome knobs might give this guitar an additional touch of class. On the other, the OEMs might still look the best because of the pickup covers, toggle cap and wang bar tip. We could give it a shot with the chrome knobs if you're willing but I do want to say this up front: I cannot guarantee if they would be the ones used after all is said and done.

Truth be told, I actually could use those amp knobs (for something else) if you're willing to part with them.

That amp logo plate on the headstock is hilarious!

Please shoot me an e-mail if you're still willing:
