I bet those files are eyeing you, too! ;-) 8)

Be extremely careful not to bend the files themselves as you snap off the handles. I put my files in a huge vise before I whacked the handles with a big hammer. The hammer snaps the handles off quickly and cleanly where the vise ensures that the files didn't bend with the hammer blow. Lastly, I use a bench grinder to reshape the snapped end residuals.

Take care mate. I'm off to bed. Image

PS: Just an idea: maybe your camera has a "makro-focus"-function that will be able to deal with those close-ups a bit better. These extra functions are usually well hidden (typical! ) but I find they help quite well once you know where they are and how to dial them in (again:  some technology can make me sick). Just a thought.

You're quite welcome.

Actually, those apples are artificial.

Thanks for the tips, I'll look into that macro business with the camera.

I think I'll pack it in for this evening myself.

As a matter of fact, it took me longer to type all this good stuff up and take pictures (such as they are/were) than it did to do the actual job.

Welcome to the wonderful world of build threads Martian! :D

I took literally thousands of pics and only ended up using a few hundred of the best ones that came out! Its very time consuming. Still, your pics accompanied with your usual excellent written commentary makes for a cracking thread! :D

Very cool that rolling your edges trick - anyone can do it!

Erm - that comment could be taken as a double-edged sword...

I have the strongest inkling there's more skill going on here than Martian's (very good) photos are revealing. And a big bit of the skill is making it look easy. 8)

Anyhow. NICE!

To Martian: Mate, I hope you know I did not mean that in a foul way - It was an observation of someone making a complicated matter understandeable and utiliseable for the common layman - to me the essence of true genius. So I hope you took it the way it was intended - as a compliment - and excuse my bad choice of words!

PS: Ceri thanks for pointing that out - me had a blind eye on that one. Cheers! :)

PLEASE don't give it a second thought, Never did I take the wrong way. And of course, I thank you for your compliment!!

Though just to be clear, Nutter, you know I meant it in the lightest possible good humor and not as a reprimand - don't you? Misunderstandings over writing tone only happen amongst newbies - the regulars know each other well enough to understand it's all done in the friendliest possible spirit. Right?

It just made me laugh - I remember a helicopter pilot being told by a passanger that now he'd seen it done he realised how simple flying that aircraft really is. The pilot - with his thousands of hours of experience - was a little frustrated at that...

BTW: thousands of photos to get a halfway useable one? Tell me about it!!! :D

Cheers - C

Wrath, from me? I'm a throw back to the, "Peace, Love and Woodstock" era.

Incidentally, Happy Halloween (here in the States, any way), everyone!

Let's all have a 'boo-tiful' day! (Now THAT is scary, don't you think?)

Well, I got a little busy early today.

I was getting the electronics together and I started thinking while looking at the tortoise pickguard that a tortoise pickguard of itself was kind of a 'vintagey' thing. I then started looking at all the stock button head mounting screws and decided that they were a bit 'industrial' looking and certainly not in the 'vintagey' vein when compared to the oval screws as found on real, vintage tortoise pickguards. Give a look:

Image

See what I mean?

So, I went to my archives and got out an additional 7 new, oval screws and my handy, dandy countersinking bit and attachment I concocted years ago:

Image

As you can see above, I can mount it to a regular drill, a cordless screwdriver below:

Image

Or my 'weapon of choice', my variable speed rotory tool:

Image

Keeping the rotary tool on the lowest speed as tortoise shell is petroleum based and combustible, within minutes, I had countersunk all the mounting holes:

Image

I then mounted the pickups and switch with the oval screws and decided, "I did well" as they do make a huge difference by comparison:

Image

Obviously, I'm getting into the electrical aspects of our build now.

I'll be on and off here all day as I will be constantly having to answer the door for our little, "Trick or Treaters".

Nice tool there sir...I'll have to remember that trick.
Never thought of the petroleum based aspect of the pg!
Another "flame" build we don't need right now... :)

I thank you. Here's another tool I use to remedy the following situations: How many times have you seen and heard people complain that no matter what they do, they cannot get a clean, hot solder joint on their tremolo claw or, when they try to solder a humbucker cover on? Well, meet my little friend whom I call, "The Medieval Soldering Iron". Notice that I put two Strat knobs next to it and made sure that I showed you its wall plug for the size of this beast. It works exceptionally well for tasks such as the above two:

This shall most definitely be used when I solder the ground wire to the claw on this build!

Anyone know how much of a difference it makes in the grounding if you solder the ground wire to the trem claw over attching a terminal lug thing and put the trem claw screw thru it, so it's still touching the trem claw?

I don't have any like that, but on a video for setting up the hipshot trem setter, the guy attched the ground screw like this, just wondering if it works worse that solding it on the trem claw.

This is the type of terminal lug I'm talking about

You could get intermittent operation if the lug is not tightly around the screw, firmly metal to metal. Or, if there is any preservative plating on the screw or lug. However, corrosion and dirt could get in between the two in time and make for a poorer connection as well. And of course, you'd have to rig it in such a way that it does not impede the operation of the tremolo in any way. This is why outright soldering is always your best bet.
