Hi Martian
What sort of body would you need to accommodate the type of bridge you have would a standard two point strat body work or one with floyd rose routing? Anyway I am looking forward to what and how you do this build. As you may or may not know I have the same pickups you are using and have postponed the finish of a build to see what electrical configuration you select.Rock on ,Craig

For the Floyd, the body rout for the arm's clearance must be bigger and sometimes, the block hole too vs. that of a 'normal' Fender's. Oftentimes too, the wood underneath the tremolo springs in the back of the guitar has to be thinned out, depending on the length of the block itself vs. how the individual body is routed. For reasons such as, but not limited to these, the Floyd is not in stone and to tell the truth, I'm not a Floyd enthusiast by any means. I personally do not like its mechanics in terms of loading the strings, intonating, etc. So, if the body has the Floyd rout, I'll work with the Floyd to perfection but if it doesn't, I'll 'dive bomb' (get it) on the opportunity to acquire a more "Fenderish" system.

The wiring is way simpler than you may think. When I get to that part of the build, I'll be explaining it in full and if you feel my configuration would work for you, I'll be happy to send you a diagram. I compliment you on your choice of pickups too!

This is going to be a real education.

I'm hoping to pick up things I didn't know before. I really think that superswitch operation needs to be implanted straight into my head. Probably with a lumphammer.

Actually, the easiest way to make sense of it is to have one in front of you where you can see all the mechanical aspects. A plus would be to have a simple but proven diagram of a specific working wiring on hand to see the interplay among the contacts/switches. Speaking for myself, it was a mental ball buster the first time I tried to analyze a brand new, unused one. I had to continually get out of my head, the mechanics of 'normal' three, four and five way switches and consider the SS as a separate entity, more akin to rotary switches.

Hi Martian!

Awesome! :D

I've just put pen to paper to try and work out what your up to with the wiring. I'm intrigued to say the least. 5 way super switch right? I'm also very much looking forward to hearing more about a “Martian Custom 750k” pot too!

Good stuff!

Andy (quite excited about all of this!)

Yep, 5 way Super Switch. I knew the switch and pot value would grab your interest!. Here's a vague hint: The pickguard shall continue to look totally stock, right down to the functionality of the three pots.

So, no push/pull pots and no no-load pots?

I think I have an idea of where your going with the two caps.... I think! But I'm a bit stumped for the rest!

:D

Andy

Nope, no 'no-load' pots. Presently, I'm 'on the fence' about making one of the tone pots a push pot.

I do believe you are on the scent regarding the two caps!

On a directly related matter, the 750K pot is now OUT of the build as it did not live up to my expectations:

As we all know, part of doing this stuff is to always keep coming up with new ideas and experimenting with ways to make the ideas reality. This is directly the case here. See, I was contemplating a 1,000K (megohm) pot for a certain application in this guitar, knowing full well that a 1 megohm pot would only be useful from '4' on it's taper down to '0' and that all the other numbers on the dial would essentially be bald. To me, this taper is and was quite unacceptable. I then contemplated a 500K pot in it's place but I was concerned about ramping up the pickup's midrange a bit more than I wanted. Logically, a 750K pot SEEMED to be a good solution. So, I opened a 2 megohm pot and altered the resistor path until the resistance was 750K (752K to be exact). I then rigged it to a temporary circuit to see how it 'behaved'. Unfortunately, it had an 'oinky' sounding midrange swell in it around '7' and then it did the '4' to '0' sweep just like the megpot. Obviously, this 750K pot [experiment] in my book is a 'no-go'.

People ask me why I don't make my own pickups. I always say that there are SO many good ones out there, there's no point in "reinventing the wheel". I shall now say something similar about pots: Those in the electric guitar business knew decades before I was even born that 250K, 500K and 1,000K were what worked best for and in electric guitars/basses. Yet, I had to give it a go for my satisfaction. So, the quick lived 750K will now be a 500K. When I get to the electronic aspects of this guitar, all shall be explained.

Hi Mr. Martian...glad to see this thread coming together. I just wanted to jump on board and hope I will get notifications so I can keep up with the progress! Looking good so far. I think your going to have several options with the build as different things trickle in. The 750 pot sound interesting. What does that to compared to a 250k pot??? Looking forward to this build!

Nice choice on the trem! Floyd roses may be a pain setting up but once they're on the guitar its a hell of a trem. Worst comes to worst im sure someone could donate a tremolno or something for it.

I hope the guy that offered and bought your other Strat won't play this one and offer you the moon and the stars.
