It takes time, my friend. There are plenty of threads that go over what is legit and what is not. How it usually goes down is that someone is interested in a guitar and they post a picture asking if it is authentic. Other members chime in with what they think and identify what is wrong if there is something wrong. Sometimes it is obvious and other times it is very subtle. So look around and read away. You will pick it up.

If on the other hand you are looking to buy a particular strat and are wanting to know if it is really a Fender, then post pictures (more is better) and the collective wisdom of the forum will help you out (usually pretty fast).
