I don't think he used a Tubescreamer, I think his pedal was a Rangemaster Treble Booster.

I saw Rory in concert in '74 and he was just amazing, just an unbelieveably brilliant guitarist.Voodoo Blues is right ,Rory's only effect was a Rangemaster.

Besides the Rangemaster Treble Booster Rory also used an MXR phaser and Boss octaver in
the late '80s and early '90s.

One of my favourite guitarists, I got into him around the same time I started playing seriously, and I would have to agree he is a very (sadly) underrated player. Great tone as well :)

Damn near the King of Rock-n-Roll...unbeatable tone-even in the 80s.

I was just listening to his album Taste earlier today - it's just magic. Real "shiver up your spine" guitar playing.

"I try to balance being really technical and being really primitive at the same time" -Rory on his approach to guitar playing...

Is there a better philosophy than that? A lot of players lose the "primitive" when they become too technical. Others are afraid of appearing 'uncool' if they flash any technique. Richard Thompson is another one who balances the two poles really well. Rory was equally great on acoustic-Check out the posthumous "Wheels Within Wheels" for a nice change of pace and a classy post-mortem release. Rory also did balance being really classy and really sweaty at the same time-also a good trick.

Rory is the best balance of raw feriocous tallent, accuracy and tastefullness. Was never afraid to play just one note where other players would play 20.

Best guitarst ever IMO.

To get a real "taste" of what he was like, you need to go straight to the live albums, the two best being Live in Europe, and Irish Tour. Both in my top 5 fav albums.

If your ever in Ireland around March theres also a week long Rory Gallaghar festival in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal. A week of Rory Tributes, usually headlined by Seamie O'Dowd of Dervish, one of the best guitarists i have viewed live.

Also, give "Riding Shotgun" by Jerry McAvoy a look. Jerry played bass in Rory's band for 15+ years and tells what it was really like to be that close to Rory.

A true legend, modest, tallented, tasteful and severly underrated.
