What do you think of him as a guitar player?

All guitarists i've ever talked to hold him in the highest regard. Very much underrated and a muso's muso.

Simply one of the best! It's reported that even Hendrix referred to him as the greatest guitar player. Listen to "A Million Miles Away" on Irish Tour. That man knew how to use a Strat to it's full potential.

There's a thread at the Fender Lounge where some guys have just "discovered" Rory....one of the best ever.
I posted that Hendrix legend where someone asked Jimi after Woodstock how it felt to be the world's best guitarist,he was supposed to have replied,
"I don't know,go ask Rory Gallagher."

Actually, the Hendrix legend was "Ask Phil Keaggy," who is equally great as a player but very different. Rory was a wonderful guitarist, peerless as a live performer and he never compromised his vision. It's great that a lot of people are discovering him-he's a refreshing antidote to all of the junk out there today or any other time. Lots of good comps out there, and definitely check out his 60s band Taste!

I thought he was primarily a Tele player.
At least every time I saw pics of him or on TV performances, he was playing a Tele.

Nooo dont think so, he used a tele occasionally on stage amongst a couple of other electrics inc another strat but his main guitar was the battered strat which according to story became "distressed" after getting wet when stolen and his acidic sweat he apparently had.

Rory used a Tele for slide and open tunings. He used a Gretsch Corvette for the same in the studio. BTW He was KILLER on acoustic as well! There are several good tribute sites, and they go into a lot of detail about his gear.

I'm a fan. Aside from being a good player, I like the way he used the Strat straight up...pretty much just the sound of the Strat and the amp.

And what a natural performer. I saw him play in a lounge in about 1973 and he was just a natural rocker. Played his butt off. No silly theatrics.

I was hanging around the lounge before the show and noticed his bass player leaning up against a doorway, and I went over and said hello. I think he was a little surprised that I recognized him and knew his name....I was a big fan and at the time I was learning Rory's riffs and the bass player's too. He invited me to come on over and party with them after the show. Wow.

Well, after the show I figured Rory must be exhausted, and thought it might probably be sort of a pain for them to have folks hanging around. Gee, Rory, I'm you're biggest fan, bla bla bla!!!!

Now I kind of figure it would have been a good idea to at least say hi. Oops.

Until now I had heard the name but never checked out his music. So I'm just now checking him out. He's awesome. Thanks for the thread. Always nice to have a new/different style/influence to add to my collection of heros. :D

I saw him once playing two acoustic guitars at the same time.
He was pure genius.
R.I.P. Rory

Got to agree with babar here. The best thing about Rory's playing was that it was just fingers, Strat, lead, amp. I think the only pedal he used was a Tube Screamer just to give his soloing a boost. Absolutely terrific player.

I saw him play live in about 87/88, he played for well over two hours and seemed reluctant to stop the gig! At one point he broke a string, wrenched it out of way and cut his hand pretty bad but carried on with the song as if nothing had happened.
