I am looking for opinions on this model, I know it is MIM, has "fat" single coils, etc. Anyone using one? Got any likes/dislikes? I am considering buying one in a few days. Thanks

I prefer those "Fat Strat" pickups over the Vintage Noiseless that replaced them in the Deluxe Players model a few years ago. The extra push-button switch is the gravy.

So how can I distinguish a super strat from a deluxe player? Serial numbers?

I don't really know, myself. The one I am looking at appears to be original and compares favorably to the options as listed for that model.

Both will have ash bodies, vintage-spec hardware , and the push-button switch below the knobs for the extra two pickup combinations but the Deluxe Player's pickups will say "NOISELESS" on the covers.

I got "stuck" with one of these, sold used at a local GC, which was represented as the Deluxe Player's Strat. I totally fell for her honey blonde beauty, playability (even as a novice, I noticed the fast neck profile), and unique tone, so I grabbed it strictly on emotions.

It had some electrical problems, though, that I discovered at home (intermittent so I didn't notice at the store), but luckily I'm good with electronics and it was a simple fix (at the jack). The way the sales person was patting me on the back and sending me out the door, I'm guessing they were glad to "unload" that guitar at $350.

It turns out, once I got home and dug more on the Internet, I found out it was a Super Strat, not the Players. At first I felt ripped off, but it is actually now my FAVORITE guitar!

Still, I was curious about the Players noiseless pickups, so I found a loaded pick guard cheap, and stuck that in a Peavey Predator. I've heard those called "Vintage Toneless Pickups" by some players, but they didn't sound as bad as I thought they would. They are definitely more "Strat like" than Gibson style humbuckers, but I'm glad I didn't put them into my Super Strat. (If I really want noiseless, I can pick up the Peavey, but despite my mods, it's still no match for my honey blond baby!)

Other differences I've found: Player's has a 12" radius neck, where the Super has 9" radius. So, I guess the Peavey's a better fit anyway, since it also has a 12" neck.

Even though this is a Mexican instrument, the vintage bridge is U.S. sized, including hole and string spacing, and bridge adjustment screws are also US size. So, the strings from E to e are, I believe, 1/8 farther apart than a standard MIM.

Bottom line, I'm glad I got "stuck" with this Super Strat, because it's the one I pick up every day and I'll probably never let it go.

Still, if a transparent blue Players with a maple neck comes around cheap, the Super may have company!

Fender MIM Standard Strat
Fender Deluxe Super Strat (MIM)
Peavey "Deluxe Player's Predator" (Fender MIM Deluxe Player's electronics)
Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus-Top
Yamaha V-Star 1300 w Cobra Speedster slashdowns and FI2000 processor
(I know that's not a guitar, but it does have tone! ;-)

+1

A pity that Fender never made the Super Strat's "Fat Strat" pickups available as a stand-alone accessory set.
