What do you make of this mystery "Stratocaster" just listed on eBay? The seller says it might be a 1960s model, but except for the neckplate, nothing looks right about it. And even that neckplate is crooked!

The guitar looks brand-new. Some features (truss rod socket) look MIM, but other parts look ... well, I just don't know.

If you look carefully in the tremolo cavity, you can even see the ends of the bridge screws poking through. And what's with the strap button on the wrong side? It's not strung for a lefty, despite the reversed headstock (which looks funny, too -- not quite the right shape, is it?)

Check it out:

22 frets on a pre cbs neck?
Black truss surround on a 22fret pre cbs neck?

Mightymite.
Obvious fake.

it looks a little to new to me and the neckplate looks kind off on an angle. The guy even says he knows nothing about guitars. The serial number is correct but i something tells me they guy who had it before went on ebay and about a vintage neckplate for it.

also the guy has a lefty neck so its clearly not original.

Feel bad for the guy if he paid alot for it

Looks to me like someone was trying piece together/duplicate the look of a right handed Hendrix-ish Strat for some reason or another.

Man that's messed up! It look like a right handed body mated to a left-handed neck. From the position of the strap buttons, I would guess the the owner was a lefty.

I think you would be really sticking your neck out on this one, as they say, "nothing ventured, nothing gained"

Not even close! Wrong logo, modern right-hand tuners on lefty neck, truss rod adjust should be at heel of neck (black plug = Mex), were no 22 frets back then, twelfth fret dot spacing wrong, looks too new....ad nauseum.

I sent a note to the seller stating the reasons why this guitar could not be a 1960's strat, and asked him to revise his listing title which implies a vintage instrument. His response:

"Thank you for your info as I am not guitar knowledgeable. I'm just going by the info on the chrome tab and it was a garage sale find. I did put in my listing that the chrome tab could have or couldn't have been placed on this guitar and went onto explain other things about the guitar how it looks newer. That is why its in the description. If I ever bought an item just by the listing title I'm sure that I would be dissapointed and it would be my fault. That is why as a buyer it is important to read the description. Also, that is why there is a question mark in my listing title. I have reiterated my information in my description if someone didn't get it the first time. "

I replied:

"Your listing is very misleading. The title implies that it is either a
1966 or 1967 with the question mark. You need to change the title
to remove the dates or indicate "1966 or 1967 neck plate" in your
title"

I then reported the listing to eBay security.

Let the listing fees eat that jerk-off alive until he wises up and figures out he's become a victim of his own scam.

Some cupcakes simply will not "get it".

Ever.

Now it is listed as a '72 Strat.

He has a bunch of pics of Jimi playing a guitar similar. As we all know, Jimi never had the chance to play a 1972 strat.

You're looking at the wrong listing. This is what the OP referenced.

It's got locking tuners, two modern string trees and no tint or finish on the neck. I'd buy a Squire affinity before I bought that. 8)
