There are some pickups that the 1st two strings aren't as loud as the others. The 57/62 reissue pickups that I have are like that. Sometimes you can raise the high side of the pickups, and/or lower the bass side, with the adjustment screws to compensate. I have the '08 Am Std Strat, and the pickups are very bright and balanced with good output on the high strings, and I have mine slightly slanted as described above. :)

At the time these pickups where developed, there was no such thing as an unwound G string. String sets only came with wound G strings. For some reason, people started putting unwound strings in place of the wound G, and it caught on and became very popular.

Companies started manufacturing string sets with unwound G strings, and some sets even come with both wound and unwound G strings.

It is normal for your guitar to sound the way it does, and there are a couple after market pickups (I think) where you can acually set the pole peice for the G string to a high or low setting depending on if you use a wound or unwound string.

When I first got a Strat, I thought the same thing, but the sound grew on me, and after learning to be a little more articulate with my attack, I think it's an awesome thing.
