The Collectors Series is different than Custom Shop. The custom Shop didn't exist until 1987, and the first Collectors Series Strats were some years before that (around 1980?). I believe that the Collectors Series were variations of the Standard Strat with special features, (or what later became the Standard, and then became American Standard), such as the Gold/Gold Strat. I don't know if there are any Collectors Series made after the CBS era ended in 1985. Maybe someone else has some more info? :)

does ANYONE know ANYTHING about this "collector's series" guitars?

Pat.

Fender usually can not provide much info on older guitars (pre-1993, if I recall correctly), but you could try emailing consumerrelations@fender.com with the serial number anyways - maybe the collectors series is an exception.

Another good choice is to post pics on the forum, there's just about always someone who can help.

From the product dating page:

C(XXXXXX) Collectors Series

Check the page for some other info. You might have to take the guitar apart and check for date stamps and other identifying marks, also check the date codes on the pots.

http://www2.fender.com/support/articles/u-s-instruments-product-dating/

As mentioned, post some pics and maybe someone can help with verification.
