I voted for the MIM. But it has got to be one from 2006 or after when they got the upgraded trem block among other enhancements. The quality improved also.

Pre 2006 MIM Stds are on par or less in some cases compared with the 80's MIJ Squiers in my opinion.

I have a soft spot for MIM Strats,I have a Jimmie Vaughn and it's a wonderful guitar in every way-very comfortable to play, sounds great and flawless workmanship.I also have a '00 MIM Strat and an '04 MIM Tele both exceptional guitars.

I have a 2009 MIM Standard Strat. The quality is excellent. I have also made numerous mods to it.

The OP is asking about 80's MIJ Squiers vs MIM Standards, which is a close race. Clearly MIM Deluxes and MIM artist signature Strats or even the Classic series are going to be superior to the Squier, generally speaking. Not all MIM's are equal, the MIM Standard being the low end of the MIM line.
