I've heard rumors that the Highway 1s are likely on their way out (from chatting with a couple of local Fender dealers) but nothing definite as to a timeframe since there is a lot of overlap with the American Specials. There are still Highway 1s being produced as 2010 models.

Technically all American Specials are 2010 models since they were introduced at the Winter NAMM show in January 2010. However, Fender produced the first run of American Specials at the end of 2009 so they had inventory to immediately fill orders taken at the show; these first run models will have Z9XXXXXX serial numbers.

There used to be a joke that NAMM really stood for Not Available, Maybe May" for brand new models - meaning that the manufacturers didn't even produce the new models until they taken orders in January or February (depending on when the show took place that year). Fender at least has them in the warehouse ready to go.

I could be wrong but I do NOT believe 2010 Hwy 1's are being made. I think the final run of them was when the Am Special was introduced. 2009 would have been the final year for the Highway 1. Again, probably worth checking with Fender customer relations for definite info, but I haven't see a new one in a long time, just ones that have been new old stock.

This particular topic seems to re-appear every couple of months.

There are over fifty different kinds of Stratocaster being produced; I honestly don't know why the introduction of one more would automatically equal the demise of a previous model. The Special and the H1 are both "budget conscious" guitars, they have the same necks with jumbo frets, the same string spacing, and they both feature the greasebucket tone circuit, but the similarities end there.

Until Fender announce that there'll be no more Highway 1's produced - or they simply vanish from the product listings as other models have done in the past - I wouldn't bet on them being discontinued. It seems to be an assumption people have made, based on the introduction of the American Special.

Sorry for ranting - this is a pet peeve of mine.
