yeah, it's 25.5". So if I wanted to go smaller, I WOULD need a warmoth conversion neck, correct?

I had pretty much given up on this idea. Although yours looks really nice. I think I may just go with a mexi tele. But this thread isn't making my decision any easier. I like the idea of the smaller scale. Hehehehe

Hi again ABPOS: if the original guitar has a 25.5" scale length and you want to shorten that then, yes, that is exactly what the Warmoth conversion neck is for.

If the original guitar already has a shorter scale length then a conversion neck is the wrong thing.

Personally, I'd do it. It won't be cheaper or anything - but it'll be your own unique, individual guitar with a personal story behind it. And you will also feel fine about changing features again in the future, so the modding need never end.

Good luck - C

Or set it on fire and send it to Ceri :D

I say go for the mod, just my .02. I learned alot modding my MIM that I would have never known if I hadn't opened it up and experimented. It also gave me a reason to come on here and meet the other members and ask for their insight on certain matters, and in case you haven't gathered yet.. there is a ton of knowledge lurking around these message boards.

well, someone down at the bottom of the page (starcaster forum) claims they are basswood. Which to me is good enough. For what? I don't know. I may get one of those GFS pickgaurds with different pups in it, just to see what it'll do. Because the electrics are for sure CHEAP on the one I have. It still has a strat sound, but I've only ever played it through the little sp10 that comes with it. Someday I'll play it through something nice.

I don't know if I'll ever spring for another neck though. It's sticking a lot into something, I'm not sure I want. I've saved up enough for a guitar and I'm probably going to get a mexi tele. But maybe I can have future plans for this one. It's always something I could do down the road and there's nothing wrong with a little variety. I really would like a smaller scale neck. And the tuners on this one suck. They look the same as other tuners, but they're just... soft or something. Like they slip. I've tightened the screw on the end but that doesn't help. And the frets will cut you if you're a lead guy. I don't mind it as much as I'm more of a rhythm player, but it's noticeable how sharp they are on the edges. I suppose I could get a kit from stew mac to file them. Maybe I could teach myself how to do fretwork on this neck. hehehehe. I could do that and put some new tuners in, and new electrics and call it a day. And then get a different neck if I don't like my job. hehehe The neck is flat as a board though.

I actually like the way mine looks. It's a burst. Black to orange with a white pickgaurd and you can see a little grain in the orange.

I just took the backplate off to look at the wood. And then it dawned on me to take the jackplate off. It appears to me to be one solid piece of wood. Which is good. I'm sure it's a cheaper wood, like basswood, but at least it's solid. Hehehehe

Isnt it the quality of the wood that makes a difference? I chose my Ibanez over my american tele just because i prefer the great balance and the large amount of bass i can get from my ibby over the poplar thats in my tele. Basswood is a great wood, but its quality and resonance of the wood. (Also, i dont really play metal, i do lots of stuff, mostly very clean)

I direct you to the bodywood chart by warmoth. Enjoy

Call up a few manufactures of necks, like Warmoth and ask them for their opinion on what you're thinking about doing. If you're paying someone to do the work, figure that into the equation of is it worth it. If you are doing the work, read up on all the other pieces you will be changing. Add up all of this and see where you end up for cost vs what a new or used MIM or MIJ guitar would cost you. If it's a labor of Love, forget the cost and go for it!

It can be nerve-wracking but also a lot of fun to tear something apart and put it back together, plug it in, strum the strings and go "Wow!".

.
Quoting jeffytune: "The first thing to do when starting a custom build is to first plan it out on paper, draw it out, what type of neck and the profile, type of frets, type of tuners and nut. What scale do you want. Then the body, hardtail or tremolo? Type of wood, type of hardware, color and type of paint and of course the type and amount of pick ups you want, all must be carefully planned out."

Easier than drawing with a pencil:

This is a "virtual guitar builder", which allows you to try out almost any imaginable combination of materials, colors, & components. Just click on the guitar you want (Tele, Strat, LP or SG) and you're off. Register with email and you can save up to 10 guitars of each model.
