You can get a good used American strat for about $650 to $750 on Ebay. You can get a new Highway one in your price range.

You can find all this info on Google.

I think a Highway One strat's around that price range. I paid $699 CDN for mine. I don't know what they cost in the US though (I assume you mean US dollars). The Highway One is very similar to an American strat. It's got a vintage tremolo (like a MIM) and has a different finish on the neck and body. I personally disliked the neck finish a lot when I bought my Highway One, but it's growing on me.

Otherwise you could look into the non-American strats like the MIM strat or some of the special edition series. I think the Lite Ash Strat is a really good one, it has Seymour Duncan pickups (Alnico II pros, I believe, an ash body and a birdseye maple neck). They're phenomenal value for money partswise in my opinion.

Check them out:

I actually played the highway one, a mim strat, and the american strat. I could tell a huge difference between all of them. Of course the store I went to I dont like because there strict about playing there guitars. This weekend I'll go to guitar center to check out the one I like. Thanks for your post guys. Is there anything I should look for in a Strat??

Something to look for in a strat? Well if you can tell a huge difference between the MIM, Highway One and a MIA, you probably already know a fair bit.

It really depends what you want in my opinion. I'm a RHCP fan so one thing I always do is take a strat, plug into a tube combo and try get a good RHCP tone (usually from the neck pickup). As far as sounds go just play whatever music you like to play, if the strat isn't cutting it then it's not right for you.

Usually clean tones are what strats are known for so if I were you, I would definitely go for something like a Blues Junior when you're at GC. An amp is so important so don't change amps when testing guitars.

Well Im pretty new wih electrics. Im a bigger fan of accoustics (have a martin hd-28  ). And I know this is bad but I want an american made guitar. I dont have a problem with MIM guitars. Its prolly really dumb to think out that way. Hopefully when I play more I will love the MIM one a little bit more.

I don't see any reason to be ashamed about prefering american made over mim. There's a good reason why american strats cost more...because they are better. There's nothing wrong with mim guitars. I've got one. If mim's were every bit the equal of american made, no one would buy american would they?

Rw/Rp vs non Rw/Rp middle single coil, vintage tuners, bridge, S1 switching vs standard, SSS vs SSH or HH pups...there's a start...good luck !

I don't know, some people (a lot of people) buy stuff just for the name attached (cough....Louis Vuitton...cough).

That's perfectly fine to want an American Strat, especially when your other guitar is a Martin. They're brilliant guitars and as much as I love my Highway One, I would have preferred an American Standard Strat (well who wouldn't). I'd still encourage you to check out the Lite Ash strat but you honestly can't go wrong with an American strat, they're brilliant guitars.

Just a word of advice though, you may get a good price on eBay, but I am a huge believer in playing before you buy.

No your right. But most of the reason why they are hgher is because it says "Made in U.S.A." Not because its a better guitar (usually).

Yeah, Ebay has it's potential problems. I've never had a problem, but I've heard of others who have. Another option is craigslist. There you can find local used axes that you can go try before you buy.

I'm not a real experienced player, but I have looked around for quite awhile. After playing several, I chose a Honey Blonde Highway One. It fit me great and was the most comfortable of all the guitars I tried. I walked out of there with the guitar and Roland Micro-cube for under 750.

I just bought the same thing, and I'm really enjoying it. If you don't mind me asking, is yours the maple or the rosewood fingerboard? Reason why is that mine is the maple, and I've noticed it doesn't have an actual fingerboard. The frets are set directly into the neck. So I'm just wondering if they're all like that.

Otherwise, enjoy. I'm loving mine.
