my '96 Fender Strat facing some problem recently
sometimes when i plug in
there is no sound
but when after i turn the cord a bit on the jack area
then the sound will appear
anyone face this problem?
if i need to change the jack
what is the part number for an original MIA Fender part?
or is there anyway to solve it without changing anything?
can i use wd40?
i think the jack not actually spoilt
because it is still working

It's possible the contact for the plug tip is slightly bent (from either age and/or use) and is not allowing plug to fully seat when inserted into the jack.

Or it could be this unusual situation......

When I bought my then-new '99 MIM 50's Classic Re-issue eleven years ago the guitar had similar symptoms as you describe. After disassembling the jack ferrule (aka the "jack boat") and inspecting the jack itself I discovered that the ferrule had been slightly mislocated when the guitar was built. It was mounted too far towards the top of the body rout by about 2.0 millimeters which caused the plug tip to butt up against the wood instead of seating properly to the jack's tip contact. To remedy this, I used a Dremel tool with a router bit to carve a slight relief dimple into the cavity at the offending area. It's never given me a bit of trouble since.

My best guess is that the solder joints in the jack are corroded or on the contact points for the phone plug if it is a problem with the guitar. Otherwise it sounds like it might be a cable ready to give up the ghost. I do not think the jack needs to be replaced, as there is not much on them to go bad, but it is worth opening it up to see the solder connections and such.

I had a similar problem with my 92 MIM, but it has seemed to work itself out now. I had it in storage for quite a while, but now i am playing it regularly.

Hope that helps.

Hi

yes you can use WD40 it wont hurt, also use a contact cleaner specific for cleaning any oxidisation off the contact points, like has been mentioned if that doesnt work a quick removal of the jack is called for, its only held in place by 2 small screws just try not to let the screwdriver slip and damage the guitar (unless you like the scratched look)

Check to see if the spring steel contact arm needs a bit of a bend to make a better contact.

Best of luck.

Why not just unscrew the jackplate (don't even bother taking the jack socket off), gently pull it away from the body and take a look.
Close the contacts of the socket in a little. Check your solder joints, then check your lead too. Whilst you have the thing out of the body retighten it to the jackplate too.

Be sure is not your guitare cable.

Remove jack plate, and look the jack how it work with your guitar cable plug in.

Bend little bit the long jack contact, make sure is "tight" on your guitar end. But not too thingt, because guitar cable will be hard to remove.

I will be replacing my phone jack with this. It is a mil-spec connector with much better construction than the cheap jacks that Fender uses.

My 1995 Strat ( Photo) and all my other Fender USA, old and newer have always good Switcraft jack.
Your 1996 Strat is not a USA made ? If you write that before,I will tell you to replace the cheap jack first .
Almost (All ?) non american made Fender have cheap electronic parts.

Do not spray WD-Messy(40) or Contact Cleaner into the input jack. Just do what "nikininja" and "stratele52" said to do in their posts. It's easy to do and the best way to check and see if the input jack is the problem, unless of course it's your guitar cable. :D

The jack you show in your photo is the standard commercial jack that Switchcraft and others sell. It is the same one used in my MIM Standard Strat. They sell for around $1.00 or so. The jack in my link above is a US military specification jack that is built much more solidly to withstand heavy use in harsh environments. It costs 4 times the price of the factory jack and will not cause the problems that the factory jack does as it ages and wears.

You can see a photo of the mil-spec and commercial jack here, about 1/3rd of the way down the page.

The mil-spec jack is on the left.

The Switchcraft jack show on the photo is a good Switcraft ($1.70 at Antique Supply) and it is very good quality. The name Switcraft is stamped under,

Its the best choice for guitar use . You don't need more.

If you have this jack on your guitar, just bend the positive tip could fix the problem.

You don't understand. That $1.70 jack is just a standard commercial jack built for light duty use. It is not designed for continuous insertion/removal of a phone plug. That is why after just a short period of time, you have to bend the center connector to make contact. I have that same jack in my guitar which is less then six months old. I've already tightened the connector once, and it needs to be done again. The mil-spec jack is designed for thousands of insertions/removal with very little wear. Used in a guitar, it will probably last the life of the guitar without ever tightening anything. And it only costs $4.00! That is a bargain and cheap insurance in my book, especially for anyone who gigs or uses their guitar much more than I do.

Yes I understand,

But do you know that I have this Switchcraft on my 1995 Strat ( 15 years) and on my 1983 Telecaster ( 27 years) and on my 1979 Strat ( 31 year) and I never need to repair or replace.
What can I say is that jack is a good product.
Buy a military spec jack if you want, it's not a lot of money but you don't need it.
First of all, are you sure you have a Switcraft jack on your guitar now and not a cheap import one ?
