Hi,
I just bought a standard 2010 MIM strat (serial number starting with "MX10...") last week-end, and would like to know more about its stock pickups.
I bought this MIM strat thinking of upgrading it... but now it play it, and i must admit that i'm very pleased by the very good quality of this instrument and of its stock electronic.
One example : the hum-cancelling that you can find on both the 2 & 4 positions on a american standard is something that also exists in this MIM strat, what i didn't expect when buying it !!!
As mainly a telecatser player, i'm not yet familiar with the strat sound, but i find stock pickups quite smooth and the sound of positions 2 & 4 are close to what i expected from a strat.
So before searching what pickups would be the best to upgrade this amazing strat, i'd like to know more about those "Standard Single-Coil Strat" as described on the product specs... Are those Alinco? Ceramic? For sure, the middle pickup in RW, but it is described nowhere...!

If anyone knows a little more about those fender MIM strats, thank you ;-)

Unless they changed things, the pickups are ceramic and I do believe the middle pickup is RWRP. I have a 1992 MIM and have never changed the pickups. I have thought about it several times, but always conclude that I like the sound. Mine seem to be a little hotter than my other strats for some reason, but that is okay for me. As others will probably tell you, if you like the sound don't change them. The day you don't like how they sound, then you can begin searching.

The pickups are Ceramics with a RWRP middle pickup. Most strats today have a RWRP middle pickup, even the cheapest $99 Squier. Personally I don't care for the stock MIM ceramics, but different strokes for different folks! Congrats on your new guitar. You should post pics.

I also have a 2010 MIM (albeit an HSS). I tried upgrading the pickups and regretted it. That guitar was just as clean as glass to start with.

Old thread I know, but...

For some reason people tend to think Mexican Fenders are somehow compromised versions of the USA guitars; and that's just not true. A Mexican strat is NOT A SQUIER!

That said, some Squiers are FINE GUITARS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT! Not all Squiers are simply beginner instruments. In fact ALL Fender guitars make fine beginner instruments. Even a USA made custom shop would serve a beginner well.

But back to my point. Stop going into a Mexican Fender instrument thinking you have to replace the electronics in order to have a good instrument. It's just not true.

If you are looking for a specific sound and are wanting a platform to experiment with then a Mexican strat is a good choice, as is a Squier Classic Vibe, or Squier Vintage Modified. My point is stop worrying about the decal on the headstock or the country of origin. Even Chinese guitars made Squiers are pretty dang nice now. Your old prejudices are a thing of the past.

An interesting comment on an ancient thread.

To an extent I agree with you although I can't comment on Squiers as I don't have one aside they can be problematic as the bodies can be dimensionally different to Strats made on the American continent.

I have several Strats from America and Mexico and my worst Strat is Mexican but then one of my favourites is also Mexican. That said, my favourite Mexican probably cost more than an American Special new and has had almost everything aside the neck replaced or refinished so is it really what it was?

I have 2 Telecasters a MiA and a Mexican. The Mexican is pretty awful but it did come from the earliest years of Mexican production and that is about the only reason I haven't got rid of it. It never gets played.

So my conclusion is there is every chance you can get good MiM's and probably bad MiA's (though I never experience one) but I think the odds are far better stacked in your favour in getting a good guitar if you stick to MiA.

The other thing you can't deny is MiA's have a certain Mojo that only MiAs have.
