I've owned a 2001 and currently have a 2003 HSS strat and the backplate is blank. I also have a 2009 MIM Telecaster and the backplate is also blank so I think this is the norm. Incidentally, all bought on ebay and all great purchases.

I have both a 2006 Classic 70’s Strat MIM and 2006 Deluxe Nashville Tele MIM.They both have a 60th Anniversary button on the back of the head stock meaning they were made in 2006.The true 60th anniversary Fenders indicate so on the neck plate and have a fake diamond somewhere on the guitar ( head stock or body ).
With that being said I have owned in my later years a 1958 and a 1971 Strat and the 2006 blow both of those away in sound, looks and playability. I don’t agree with the people that say the MIA is better than the MIM or even MIJ because no matter where it is made they all have bad or good made guitars. I call it luck of the draw and there are some that have more MOJO or as I also like to call it magic in the wood.It makes no difference if it is made with ash.alder.basswood or what ever the biggest thing is what you want in playability comfort (weight) and hardware.
It has been said by many people that from 2006 on that the upgrades on the MIM's have brought the MIM up to speed with the MIA for me they are all Fenders and if you know what your looking for you can find a great guitar without droppng MEGA BUCK'S !
Here are my two Baby’s’!
