Has anyone had an issue with the S1 switching/pick-up arrangement on their Strat? I have an American Deluxe that is just over a year old and I don't play this particular guitar much. I decided to play it over the holidays and discovered something wasn't quite right, so I take it to the shop and my local repair shop says the middle pick-up went south...This is a guitar that has been taken out of my music room twice since I bought it new in '06 :x .

pickups rarely go bad unless you surf with your guitar as a paddle.

Well not being an electronics guy, I don't know. But the tech looking at the problem indicated that Fender had published a known fault in this area. He also told me that Fender would replace the middle pickup free of charge.

The repair tech I'm using is an authorized Fender repair shop.

Does anybody know anything about any known problems with the S1 Switching / pickup arrangement on the American Deluxe Stratocaster?

The S-1 switch puts a capacitor in series or parallel, depending on pickup selection, with the pickup to change the tone.

So I got my Strat back from the repair shop last night WOO HOO!!! :D

The middle pick-up was the problem. Fender sent a replacement free of charge which was cool. Anyway, this guitar sounds fantastic! Now that everything on it works like it should I'm a fan of the S1 Switching arrangement. I still want to get a traditional American Strat, but this one has a great voice all its own.

This guitar will definitely get some playing time now in between my PRS guitars.

No, that's not true. Pickups can go bad from simple use. I had a P-bass pickup fail on an instrument that never left the house.

Gravity Jim is correct. I've also had a pickup "go south" in a guitar that had never left the house.

Not to crash thread, but would it work on a Hwy1?

The eyelet (where the coil wire meets the output leads) solder joints can go cold. Often just reflowing the solder fixes it.

Being a production manager in an electronics factory in an earlier life, I can attest that trying to keep up with production demands leads to a lot of cold solder joints (where the temp of the base and the wire to be soldered are different temps and don't bond well). The fix is as simple as reheating the joint evenly and allowing the solder to reflow. Even just a hole in the solder can cause unwanted capacitance and noise. I always reflow joints before considering a part malfunction.

I've got S1 switching on my American deluxe. It works great... rather like have two strats in one guitar!
