I have a 96' Strat Plus w/ factory Gold Lace Sensors. I'm not that crazy about the bridge pickup ... sounds a little weak and empty to me. I am wondering if replacing the cap with a different value will help eleviate the problem. I'd like it to sound heavier/darker. Can anyone tell me what the factory cap is, and how to help correct the sound w/o replacing the pickup? Thx!

Hi There.
I will giv'er a go.....
Typically, a Strat is set up with no tone control on the bridge pick-up, if this holds true for yours then a cap change will do nothing for it at all.

I do not have a plus with the gold lace in it, but the ones I played it didn't seem to have a tone control for the bridge, so I would say you are stuck looking for a new pick up.

Hey Jeff ... thx for the insight! Didn't want to have to swap anything out, but I may not have a choice.

Hi Yerfy,

You can easily move the tone control from the mid to bridge pickup. Just move the wire from the bottom tone pot at the selector switch, over to the next lug. Easy to put back also.

Strat Plus have a tone control for the bridge. The cap I think is a .022k.

I will go pull the guitar out of it's hiding place and see if it has a tone control for the bridge ... it's been a while since I've played it. If it doesn't I will follow you advice Shimmilou, and maybe put a .047 in it?? Thx guys, I appreciate the help.

Changing the capacitor won't change the sound of the guitar. Increasing it's value will just make the treble bleed off faster as you lower the tone control. It may take a slight edge off the treble at full open settings if you go to a bigger size. Your guitar is passive, theres no extra bass to be had out of it. For that you need to go active.

So, I just tinkered around with the guitar and the rear tone knob controls both the mid and bridge pickup. So I guess trying a different may be a cheap way to see if I can tweak the sound at all. If not, I will consider other options.

ive done capacitor changes on most of my guitars over the years. its trial and error till you get the sound your looking for. what i did was go to radio shack ad buy a pack of mixed capacitors they give you ten or so of each. that way you can go back to one without having to fool woth twisted ends . just write down what you tried and the result. takes a few minuts to change one out and retune.

I've never done work on my own guitar before. I just need a soldering gun, correct? Is there a link in this forum for instructions? It doesn't seem like it would be that hard, but it makes me a little nervous. I have an Agile Les Paul coming in the mail tomorrow, maybe I will try it on that one first.
