I have a Deluxe American Strat (DZ5 SN) but it has a rectangular heel. All of the 05 SN I've seen (except mine) have a contour heel. Did Fender made some Deluxes with a non-contour heel or is it possible that I have a deluxe neck with a non-deluxe body? Thanks for any info.

No is the short answer mate.

The 04 Deluxes had contoured heels, they have ever since. I'm not sure about previous models.

If this is a prospective purchase, walk away from it mate. At best it's a american standard body on a deluxe neck.

It's lost the best feature of the Deluxe in my opinion.

Ugh. It's bought and paid for. Gonna have to see what I can work out with this seller.

Any case, thanks.

All the best with it Zen.

What did you pay for it mate? There's no reason to ditch it if it's a good guitar.

Also forgive my previous oversight but there was/is the Mexican Deluxe player Strat that I believe did have a square heel. Could it be one of those?

I suppose it could be anything, but the plate says Corona, CA on it. I looked at the listing for it and the seller refers to it as an early 2000s Deluxe, which might have been his way of saying it's an 05 neck on an earlier Deluxe bod.

I paid $700 US for it, so I've prolly made worse deals in my life.

Like I say it's not the end of the world if it's a good guitar. Only your hands and ears can judge that one.

The 05 Deluxe had SCN pickups and a S1 switch. Before 2004 they had Vintage Noiseless pickups. The VN's have noiseless written on them in gold (I think, not sure). SCN's have SCN molded into the plastic cover. It can be hard to spot, it's on the bridge side of the G,B and E polepieces.
It should have a 2 point trem and some had LSR rollernuts fitted to the neck. Some didn't, they did/do both. Also it should have locking tuners and abalone fret inlays.

You could always shape the heel and change the neck plate. Though that could be more trouble than it's worth. It's a nice feature but not worth the agro of a respray in my opinion.

If you can upload some pictures of it and post a link people here will gladly take a look for you.

In fact, Fender officially introduced the contoured neck heel on the American Deluxe series in 2002. Guitars and basses made prior to that date had rectangular heels/neckplates.
