A set of CS '69 pickups would go a long way toward his sound.

Nah go for 65's, the song was recorded in 66!

(Just kiddin)

Get a plexi, turn it up all the way, stick to your middle pickup.

Theres no effects on the original recording.

My preferred "Red House" tone is position 4 (middle + neck) with the neck tone control rolled all the way back.

Here's my take on it!
I'm using DiMarzio Area 58's and a 54 Pro during the taping of this video.
(I've since changed to an Area 67(n) Area 58(m) and a Virtual Solo (br.)
I'm playing through a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 4x10 with a Boss DD-3.

It's a pretty convincing tone match...I've been told.....

I'm a Hendrix freak and used to play a lot of Hendrix covers in bands I was in.For Red House I always used mid and neck pups and all the tone controls on the Marshall turned up full. You'll need to overdrive your amp to get the studio sound with an echo set on 3 repeats and that should do it. To cover his live version you need to max everything and for the solo use a Fuzz Face (an Atibitar if you have the bucks)although a Big Muff Pi can come pretty close to nailing the tone.BTW Roger Mayer-Jimi's own master effects builder-is still making authentic reissues of the effects that he made and modded for Jimi, sadly I lost his web address but you should find it if you Google his name-that's how I found him. Also there 's a guy in Hawaii who specializes in Jimi type effects mods his name is Tom Lanik you can email him at tomlanik@earthlink.net or check out his website : www.northstaraudio.net. Hope this info helps. Rock on with Jimi.
