Hello All,
While passing a tag sale today, I decided to stop in and have a look. The old couple was selling a Fender Stratocaster that belonged to their estranged son in law. They wanted $500. I offered $250 and they let me have it for $325.

After some research I found that I have a:

1988 Eric Clapton Signature Model Strat in Pewter. I realized that this was this lines first year. Did I get lucky here?

Does anyone have any idea what this guitar may be worth?

Thank you so much,
Richard

Oh wow that brings back memories,in 1997 we went to Montreal for a week and went to the Hard Rock Cafe where I got my pic taken holding Claptons first pewter Clapton Model Strat and I still have it on my music room wall.If it's in good condition and has the original Lace Sensors it could be worth up to $1,100.

If he's "estranged" they probably knew the value and did it just to pi$$ him off.

In most states since it was not there property to sell you could find yourself getting sued.

I know in my state you would have the courts on there side.

If I was you, I would delete this thread and just be happy with your score.

You should have given them $500.

It sounds like you're rejoicing that you ripped them off.
I don't mean to say that you are, but it could be taken that way.

i was in this position once, but for a much much MUCH sweeter deal.
i saw a guitar that i wanted. i asked them if they wanted to sale it
and they said that they never really thought about it. two days later i got a price from them and i sprang on the opportunity.
do i feel bad about it? nope not at all. i didnt make up the price, they did.
did i know that the guitar was worth loads more than their asking, yes i did.
if your gonna sale something you should do some research before you do.
know what you have and know the going rate, same as when your in the market to buy.

sounds to me like the poster got a deal via bargining.
he made an offer and they accepted the exchange.
in deals like this i feel more for the buyers than the seller.
why? the seller is always at upper hand if the deal was setup to go bad.
usually the seller is doing the ripping.
if i offer you X ammount of dollars for something you have and you accept it, its on you. i didnt force you to say yes, the opportunity to say no was yours as well. GRAY area maybe, but knowing what you got is all on the one doing the selling.
these folks were probably just as happy to get what they did.
the son-in-law is probably some deadbeat that they have had to bail out many times before, and not only is he ungreatful, heprobably still owes them or their daughter in some major way.

my advice, clean it up, get it setup and put it away only bringing it out on those special days. get you a MIM strat to pound around on and leave the better quality for when it is either really needed or wanted to enjoy.
(somebody please help me down off this soap box. it has grow taller since i got up here lol)

It is always nice to get a deal on a guitar. They were glad to get rid of it and you were glad to get it.

When I die my wife will sell my collection I am sure at bargin prices even though I put a paper in each case as to the value and I also enclosed a data CD with all the pics she needs to sell the item on ebak as well as the write up so it can't be easier but you know how non player wifes are about guitars taking up space.

Thomas

PS; The guy who owned the guitar will not be happy for sure.

Sounds like you got a great deal on a Sig Strat. The sellers agreed to the price so you need not feel guilty. Congrats and play it in good health!

What I'm referring to in my post above is not that they undervalued the Strat--that is either their choice to do so, or their fault for not knowing better.

What I'm referring to is they had a price of $500, you know the guitar is worth more than that and you make a much lower offer.

You should have just given them the $500 and left it at that.

That would have been a decent thing to do.
