Hello all, I recently picked up my very first Fender but I'm not sure exactly what model it is or what year it was made. It's a black strat with a rosewood board and an original floyd rose, serial is J035408 and it looks exactly like this:

http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/2727/59526687.png

The serial is on the back of the neck near the body and it says made in japan, but the neck plate says usa?

Thanx in advance for the help! :D

A "J" serial number would make it a made in Japan model from 1989-1990. Late 1990 was about the time that Fender took over distribution of the Floyd Rose from Kramer; you could have an early HRR Strat with a Floyd.

I only saw 1-2 of these (and I think one of them had the Kahler "Steeler" bridge which was an exact license of the original Floyd Rose) but I believe that they were like the HM Strat and a couple of Contemporary Strat models of that era in that they had the "Fender USA" neck plate but were either 100% made in Japan or assembled in the USA from made in Japan parts. I believe (based on my memory of the prices) that the HRRs were all assembled in Japan even though they have that "Fender USA" neck plate but I could be wrong.

Hi There.

Something looks wrong here.

J + 6 digits 1989-1990.

This guitar in the picture you posted looks like a newer MIM model.

Can you double check the serial number.

So is it an '89 or a '90, or is there any way to be certain? Here are some proper pics I just took. Also, does the case look to be original? It looks like a regular strat case but it doesnt say Fender on it anywhere?

Ledforlife - thanks for posting the photos of your actual guitar. I do remember these; you have an MIJ Fender HRR Strat. Since it has a Floyd Rose Original bridge it should be from fairly late in 1990. It seems to me that Fender didn't take over distribution of the Floyd Rose until the fall of 1990. To get a more accurate date you would have to remove the neck and see if there are any dates stamped on the neck heel or in the neck pocket of the body - I know Fender does this for USA and made in Mexico guitars so I'm pretty sure their Japanese supplier did this as well.

You don't have a photo of the back of the guitar, but if I'm remembering correctly these had the beveled neck plate (like the HM Strats and the current American Deluxes); these neck plates always said "Fender USA" even though they were used on this MIJ model.

Fender MIJ guitars do not come with cases from the factory. The case you have looks pretty nice but if it doesn't have a Fender logo it's probably a generic G&G replacement case.

Thanks for the help man, you have confirmed what I already suspected. The guy I got it from said it was an '89 but I wasnt sure. The neck plate looks exactly like this. One last question: What's it worth?

You will love the guitar and the tremolo system. Be sure to google direction on the setup of the Kahler. It is easy to trash the adjustment screws and parts if you don't know what is what. youtube has videos also that are good.

It's already my favorite guitar that I have ever owned, it's got a super thin neck and plays fast like the ibanez rg shredders I grew up playing, but it's got the classy good looks of a fender, I love it! :D

I tried looking them up on eBay but didn't find any HRR Strats; that's probably the best guide to what they might be worth.

Just to hazard a guess I would think something in the $500-ish range since it is an MIJ model. I think these were something like $700-ish new back in the day.

Your HRR was made in the same factory as the Ibanez RG shredder's you grew up playing :)

I had an HHR that I bought new in 1993. It was a great guitar. Was unfortunately badly damaged in a flooded rehearsal space. Wouldn't mind finding another one day.

Good times, cause I only gave $200 for it with the case. Thanx for the help. :D

Now I am confused, where did you get the first picture from?

This looks like a MIJ Floyd rose model.
The case looks right, not all of them have a Fender logo on them.
For 200, you got a very good deal.
