Hi. I'm a drummer (wait, don't shoot) and a neophite guitarist. And I play piano and bass pretty well. I'm going to begin serious recording work in my home studio soon, and I need some help. I'm putting a downpayment on an American Deluxe HSS tri-color sunburst rosewood necked strat this coming Friday, and, well, I just want to know if it's a good decision. I play all types of music and I was told that the HSS would be a very decent versatile choice. Any feedback would be most appreciated.

It is very versatile but bear in mind that especially when it comes to recording you have to be very careful on the choice of tones. What I mean is that an excellent guitar sounds like crap through bad (pre)amplification, while a crap guitar may sound perfect if you have good equipment and most importantly a good right (picking) hand. A good sonic palette is also very inspiring, so I suggest you pay lots more attention to how the signal of your excellent guitar is shaped and colored. Good luck!

First I'd like to say good choice. I have an old HSS BC Rich and it's a very versitile guitar, the single coils at the neck and mid are great for mellow bluesy stuff and the bridge humbucker is great for harder, heavier music. If you are going to be around flourescent lights or other sources of electrical radiation Samarium Cobalt pickups might be something to consider, not to mention they, from what I've heard, just sound and feel awesome. Since I already own four Strats (You can never have too many!) my next choice would be of the same one your making. Good luck.

P.S. You can't go wrong with a Fender!

That's good to hear, but yes definately look for a good combo amp or something with a very good rep. Can't stress how much that counts. :)
