Here's my '92 SRV Strat I'll be playing on a gig tonight.

Image

I was in high school when Texas Flood came out, definitely an important album of my youth. The first time I saw him and Double trouble on Austin City Limits, I was blown away.

It was through him that I found Albert King, Albert Collins, and Lonnie Mack. I stuck with the blues and have ended up backing many West Coast blues legends to this day.

SRV can be controversial in some circles, especially with older blues 'traditionalists', but SRV was a gateway for me to the deeper blues, as was Clapton, Page, Beck, etc in the '60s.

Q: How many guitarists does it take to cover an SRV tune?

A: All of them, apparently. :)

RIP SRV.

SRV is who started my interest in finding out more about the blues. I have always been amazed at his ability to play. He made it look so easy and didn't seem to make any mistakes.

One thing that I have noticed on Ultimate Guitar forum is that there is alot of criticism about SRV. They state that he nothing any different than artists before him. I don't think he was trying to be any different and if they want to be that serious I think you can say any musician throughout history was influenced by someone else.

Man, I'll never forget it. I was riding in my buddy's car listening to the college radio station when they broke the news. I knew it was a big deal, but I didn't know at the time just how good he really was. Now whenever I hear Riviera Paradise I get sad because I'll never get to see him play. :(

I am glad you mentioned Riviera Paradise. I am listening to it now. Possibly the best player I will never get to meet.

You don't have to worry about that here. :) Even though not everyone is a fan of his music I think that just about everyone here has a certain respect and understanding for him.

Even though he died before I was born, I'm so glad that I found his music. Even if it was eighteen years too late. SRV has been such a huge inspiration to me musically and personally. I really wish I could have seen him play, or at least thank him face to face.

SRV was a master - one of the all time greats... I love his music, I love his interpretation of Jimi - one of his biggest influences. I'll never forget the day I heard Stevie died. I had had opportunities to see him in concert and passed them up, always thinking I'll catch him next year and then he was gone. After that I immersed myself in his music, studied it and marveled. 20 years - I can hardly believe it has been that long. R.I.P.

That was a terrible day. Something in the air, or the wrong kind of fates aligning or something.

I guess it's well known that Clapton was due to ride that helicopter, but gave up his seat for SRV who had pressing enagements. One way or another, a legendary blues guitarist was always going to die that day..

Saw a great Tribute Band last night for SRV..."Six Strings Down" based in Boston. 3 smokin' sets! My ears are still ringing this morning!!
Spoke to the guitarist a bit.. very nice guy. Very appreciative of the crowd and pretty big crowd it was. Lots of folks were coming in off the streets and filled the place. 20-somethings for the most part. So Stevie's music lives on!!

Not to nit pick but it wasn't Clapton, it was someone in his entourage.
