hi guys

i have a mim classic 60's strat which i love. i am having problems with the truss rod/setting the relief.

it is currently at around .018th of an inch, whereas i believe that on a 7.25" neck it should be around 0.12. the truss rod doesn't want to tighten up enough to straighten the neck, i have removed the nut/screw and everything seems ok, i think maybe the truss rod is bottoming out against the end of the nut.

i'm probably going to take it in to a repair shop next week, but does anyone know if it's going to be an expensive job?, or any ideas as i am a bit skint at the mo

cheers

Are you tightening it with or without strings on it?
If you have the strings on it, make sure to pull the neck back when you tighten (so the nut isn't doing all the work).
If thats not it, then you should simply be able to add a spacer/washer to keep it from bottoming out before you get to the proper relief.

+++++1
Hopefully you don't need a spacer, but here is what one looks like for reference: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Truss_rods/ ... e_Kit.html
A tech shouldn't charge much for straightening out a stubborn neck. I had the same problem you have and decided to take my guitar to the local $25 setup guy before trying the spacer trick. He knew exactly where to bend the neck while tightening the truss rod and it's been fine for the past 2 years and counting.

it is a 60's reissue so truss rod nut is at the body end, so you have to release all the string tension, i usually leave the capo on at the first fret to keep the strings in place. only thing about the spacer is if the nut sticks out further then the neck might not fit in the pocket, but we have some small shims at work so will try one of those.

Without putting a hand on the neck all speculation is useless. Take it to a tech. If all is good, they'll charge around £20 to sort it out. You'll probably get it done cheaper.

turns out the neck was slightly twisted. so on the 6th string there was loads of relief, on the 1st string, well it was pretty straight..... the tech is going to try and sort it for me, and sort the nut and a few frets out. it will be around 50 quid plus cost of nut, but it will hopefully all be sweet
thanks for the help guys
