Nitrocellulose lacquer. Try a search for 'nitro' and you'll get more information than you need.

Fender used nitro during the 50's and 60's, and only uses it today in the Custom Shop, certain artist signature models, American Vintage Reissues, Highway 1, and Road Worn series. You're right that a MIM Standard's finish will not wear away in the same manner as those guitars. MIM Standards have a polyester finish, and MIA Standards have a polyurethane finish. Poly finishes are tough as nails!

Ok thanks, but I've seen the specs of stevie ray's and mayer's signatures and the body paint is put as urethane D:

That's because the guitars you linked pictures of are the vintage ORIGINALS, not their signature models. The specs of the modern signatures aren't going to match up 100% with their original guitars. Besides, SRV couldn't have played one of his sig Strats because he died even before they started rolling off the assembly line.

Fender just decided to use poly on the Mayer and SRV sig Strats. I'm sure they have their reasons and did all the calculations. Nitro costs more to manufactuer for a few reasons and maybe Fender wanted the Mayer and SRV sigs to be at a certain pricepoint that meant for shooting in poly rather than nitro. Who knows?

It nitrocellulose lacquer. And your guitar will show signs of wear if you play enough. Though it may not be as extreme as the guitars in some of those pictures.

Get a HWY1 Strat or one of the nitro painted Strats.

If you get a HWY1 then get some rubbing compound and cotton cloth to hand buff it to a shine.

If you want the warn look then play the guitar like there is no tomorrow and wear the paint down. Over time the paint will wear away and it will be authentic.

By the way I recently read somewhere that some early Fenders, namely solid colors, were not given a clear coat. This would explain a lot.
