Vegemite is made in Australia and it rocks (just don't use too much at first)

Marmite originated in England but is made in Australia and New Zealand... it also rocks

Here is info on the urban legend of Vegemite in the USA

Rumour of ban in United States

In October 2006, the Melbourne newspaper, the Herald Sun incorrectly reported that Vegemite had been banned in the United States, and that the United States Customs Service had gone so far as to search Australians entering the country for Vegemite. The story appears to have originated as an anecdote by a traveller who claimed to have been searched by US Customs. Also, a spokesperson for Kraft made a misinformed comment to reporters. The story led to some anti-American comments in blogs and newspapers. The Herald Sun blamed George W. Bush, at the time the president of the United States, for the ban, and encouraged readers to post comments on its website and send emails to the White House.

The US Food and Drug Administration later stated that there were no plans to subject Vegemite to an import ban, or withdraw it from supermarket shelves.

The United States Customs and Border Protection also tried to dispel the rumour, stating on its website that "there is no known prohibition on the importation of Vegemite" and "there is no official policy within CBP targeting Vegemite for interception".

The story of the "ban" later took on the status of urban legend. While Vegemite has never been popular in the US, it can still be purchased at supermarkets that stock imported food items.

Too bad it wasn't Men At Work that were banned in the USA.

While I was typing my above quote, I couldn't help but thinking that Epiphone instruments surely outsell Gibson instruments as the price of Gibsons are cost prohibitive to most players nowadays where granted, most modern day Gibsons are fine guitars but there is absolutely nothing about them which supports their astronomical price tags.

Not too long ago I was at a product demonstration by a corporate shill from Epiphone.

During it he said that Epiphone was the 3rd largest in sales in North America, behind Fender and Gibson (Although Gibson is it's parent.)

I have no idea if this is true, and/or if he meant dollars of sales or if he meant units. I could easily see Epiphone outselling Gibsons 3 to one, and still falling behind in dollars of sales.

To me Gibson is the Sony of the Guitar world. You know you're going to get a prime instrument, but you can get an equal to possibly better instrument for a vastly better price as long as you aren't married to the brand name.

Hi dodgytoo: I can see how this myth would come about. US Customs take ANY and ALL foodstuffs off people entering the country. My American aunt is a mustard nut (uh-hu...) and travelled home with a suitcase full of excellent English and European mustard - only to have the lot confiscated at customs. The only time she's ever been searched, as it happens.

Individuals bringing things through customs is a whole different issue than commercial import, which is subjected to various tests and inspections. The US imports all kinds of foodstuffs from all over the world - though from what I've seen in supermarkets apparently not cheese, very sadly and ill-advisedly for them...

Anyhow. I've travelled all over the globe for decades with jars of Marmite in my baggage train. Once I had everything I possessed stolen on an Indian railway station and was left with nothing but a jar of Marmite in one coat pocket and a copy of Hunter S Thompson's Great Shark Hunt in the other. No sweat: the journey could continue. 8)

I hereby give notice that I shall be entering the United States next month and I shall be carrying a jar of Marmite. If you hear on the news of an incident; "man fights to the death at customs defending jar of Marmite from officers"... you'll know what happened.

***

I wonder if mc_deli has picked up his Amber Am Dlx yet? Perhaps he's run away screaming...

Cheers - C

Ahh, the yeasty, savory, soy like flavor...

Got us a squeeze tube of Kraft Vegemite in the pantry, which we break out at Christmas time. Once the bottle of Crown Royal hits the table the men get jacked up on dares to eat fork-fulls of the stuff. Good times!

EDIT: Wonder if Dr. Thompson ever enjoyed the delicacy?

If disgusting food dares are your game then you can also try shots of Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce without being sick

I lived right next to the factory for 10 years so I'm immune to the stuff!

The reason for the lack of guitars was mentioned ... the reason vegemite exists was not.

Just be warned, a tiny bit more of the stuff than you should be putting on the bread will ruin everything. Marmite/Vegemite spreading takes skill and dedication, its a long road to taste perfection so stick it out!

Marmite thread hijacking alert!

I think the reason US Customs banned Marmite was due to its high narcotic nature. Marmite has high contents of not only beer yeast but Opium as the results of England's fall out with China in 1856 in the Opium Wars. This explains several things: 1) Why people continue to use it even though it tastes so terrible, 2) it's highly addictive nature, 3) its black sticky properties, and 4) why Brits (and their descendants Downunder) use it. Americans had no choice but to stop the Marmite plague from spreading across our nation.....

BUT NOW a new crisis has hit Briton. There has been shortages of Marmite across the nation and they are not sure when new orders will be able to be filled. Some think that this has to due to flooding that took place at the Marmite factory. Others have reported that Islam in UK has banned beer yeast causing shortages of one of their main ingredients. I called the Marmite company and was told that due to the bad economy, the Marmite company laid off workers last year, and now record orders are coming in and their is no way they can keep up this the demand......
