Hey Nikininja, no worries, mate!

I fully understand your point. I have a few beaten-up and severely modified pieces myself, and I wouldn't part with them either. I had no clue it was so dear to you. Sorry for buggin' ye! ;)
I might get back to you for some infos on neck modeling if I may. At some point in the near future I will need a new Strat and my problem is I still haven't found what I'm looking for (HELP! U2 FLASH! go AWAY, Bono! :)). It seems a V neck (or semi V as you described it) suits me best; my problem being such: There are no stock V-necks with rosewood board. Therefor I might get a really thick U-shape or something and take off material until I get the shape I feel comfortable with. I remember our great inspiration Ceri's last project had quite a bit of neck in it, which I took as a sign reading "It can be done!".

So for our little exchange here I am all the more thankful! Cheers!

Again, thanks for your time mate!

-Nutter

Thankyou kindly for the offer but due to my savage work commitments my social calendar is pretty much non-existent. Mrs Bighair had to remind me to stop and eat something the other day. :(

Your going to love Brighton.....it rocks! I'll give you a shout so you can join me and Ceri when we have our beachfront deck chair fight! :D

Cheers

Andy

Cmon guys, enough already eh?

Fact is I don't think my nuts are all that great. Maybe it's because I see em all the time.

There's a load of problems with em that I can't decide are down to design or my lack of skill. Based on my performance at slotting a new nut for my tele on Wednesday night, I'd have to pick incompetence.
4 hours carefull carving only to cut the high E slot too deep. Bloody fool I am.
It's not like you can cheat with the things in that instance and shim the bottom of the nut with a slither of scrap bone. You need the shelf section to contact as much of the fretboard as possible to keep it stable.

Ahh, a perfectionist! Never saw any of those around these parts... ;-)

Well I still think they're top notch, from what I've seen on here. If by any chance one distant day I get a guitar upgraded with one, I'd sure be a happy man. Do you do one-offs? Might I give you a shout at some point?

cheers!

Monsieur a nut job for a Nutter would be a delight. I must say though that wasn't a case of being a perfectionist. That was just a sloppy schoolboy error. You only get one chance at nutslots.
Also I'd only do it, if I install it, gratis of course.

The better one, or more accurately the one you will notice the most striking results with, is the telecaster nut. It's designed specificaly to work with 3 saddle telecaster bridges. One is shaped to work with Wilkinson compensated saddles the other with standard round barrel Fender vintage accurate types. The better setup is with the wilkinson compensated saddles. Either way, you'll get decent sounding open chords that don't stray too far from being in tune.

The one I designed for Strats and 6 saddle Tele's is good. I'm just not sure it's worth the agro of having it. Earvana use a teflon impregnated plastic for their compensated nuts. It makes the world of difference on those elongated slots in regard to tuning stability. Also if the guitar has worn frets you have to be carefull in setting the break angle of the string or you start slotting into the wood behind the nut.

Theres ideas I have to get round both problems, best try em out on my own guitars first. (thought em up as I was typing) So I'll be cutting bone on Sunday. If you tell me which guitar your looking at, I'll cut the shelf and radius the underside of it. Ready to go in, whenever you want.

Why not have a go at doing it yourself. I found it quite engrossing when I first got into it.
Heres the measurements for the strat nut. Only take notice of the measurements on the right hand side. The left hand side measurements are from the back edge of the nut. All nut slots on the neck are different thickness's so those left hand measurements change from guitar to guitar. The right hand side measurements are from the front edge of a traditional nut.

Done a few nut jobs (sorry, there is just no way to make that sound right)..

And I too have gone too deep (man, that still don't sound right lol).

I have found instead of shimming the entire nut..I add material to the slot I F'ed up.

CA glue works and it is clear and invisible. Granted the best thing is to not F up and if you do to use another nut and start over. But if you just need a quick fix, or are not a perfectionist, ..it can be done.

You're absolutely right mate. I glue slots rather than replace a normal nut. However the nut I carved was shaped to compensate for low fret intonation problems. Consequently the slots are longer than on a traditional nut. The telecaster nut I designed is about 8mm wide at its widest point.

This is the strat nut

It's quite discrete when compared to the tele nut. Here's both to show some of the size difference. Despite being further away the tele nut looks a lot wider.

All this talk of slotting nuts has me cringing in my seat.

yeah too much nuts and bone talk. But yes..I am glad you posted those pics of your nuts so I can understand. The tele nut is in the pic is rather atypical.

amazing what one can learn on this forum. I had to clear some space in the yard for the Ferraris that should be on their way...

Hi chaps: (just catching up on this thread) I'm up for that!

Ah, how fondly I remember my last drinking / deckchair fighting session in Brighton. Well, you've seen the West Pier - nuff said. 8)

Cheers - C
