Quick question...... Could you show us how you hold the body when you spray it? Like a stick screwed into the neck socket or a hanging by a wire??? or ???
almost forgot bout this one...

It's a stick through body, I used 2 screws that just barely bite into2 of the neck screw holes in the body. Strong enough to hold it, but doesn't widen them or effect the neck to body join later.

I cut a crude slot into the other end.

I usually like to start each spraying pass by holding the stick, so i can spray the lower bout first, then the inside of the horns (sometimes i do these last though, to even out the spray patterns.

Then I usually hang it to do the front, back, and sides, not always in the same order, but usually the front last, because if I have a wrong setting on a gun, or if anything goes wrong, i would prefer it happen on the back.

i have a temporary greenhouse, can be assembled disassembled quickly, on my deck. i drilled and mounted a hook in one of the pieces at the peak of the frame.

Image

i hang from there.

Sometimes you want to lay flat, so i made this little rig for that, using pieces of the same lumber as the stick, so it fits in nice and snug.

Image

I didn't spray flat on this one at all though.

Spraying flat allows some margin for error in how much material you spray, as gravity helps it lay flat and avoid sags or runs. obviously if you way overdo it, you'll get them anyway. But I find if i hang it, I have to be super careful in controlling the thickness of my passes, and it actually forces me to be more precise.

Some people spray flat also, because they like to spray the neck cavity too, and there's no other way to go about it.

I have the same screw hook (several actually,) screwed into the bottom of a shelf in my downstairs storage room, so i hang there for the axe to gas off.

When I spray the LP, it will be a combination of holding by the neck (when doing the face of the guitar,) using an eye hook where the lower strap peg will go, and laying flat, I will make a turntable, most likely for the burst.

see ceri's threads for examples of spraying without hanging.

Twelvebar,

Really nice work on the guitar and on the thread. I'm looking forward to see it all polished up at the end. Very cool approach to getting the Candy Apple effect and I'm loving the stripes!8) Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the kind words

I also have a warmoth neck with Pau ferro fingerboard, to start working on, like yours

i actually had mine first, and your thread helped give me a kick in the pants to get going on my project.

Did you have to adjust the trussrod on yours, i have to look at the side adjustment thingie and see how it works.

I have a micro adjustment on my warmoth neck. It was definitely useful during setup, allows you to do small adjustments really easily. and I'm sure over time it would be helpful.

I only adjusted mine very slightly using the side adjustment. I'll have to re-read the instructions that came with it if I ever need to make any large adjustments.

Damn - I wish I knew how to do animated GIFs. Very cool, 12B! 8)

Anyhow. Is it nearly finished yet?

Great Thread -- ashamed it's taken me so long to check back in

Sorry for switching gears a bit (not trying to highjack the discussion...)

For my decal design, thank you Ceri for the high praise!

On the issue of logo decals, short of using a spot color process on press with special metal flake inks, there is no real way to produce metallic result like you see on authentic Fender logos. That's as it should be. Now you could hand paint something but that's way out of my lane...

With my logo, once I had the image final I printed the results on clear decal paper specially formulated for laser printers.

IMHO, the results are as good as can be expected using laser technology. I would recommend this style as an easy DIY home method.

Now, back to the thread... :D

There are a couple viable options for metallic on the logo. But they aren't exactly 'novice friendly'

I am looking into exploring one of theose options, and I will document my experiments, whether successful or (more likely,) dismal failure. So stay tuned...

BTW 12B - I haven't read all four pages yet, but I was curious...

Did you custom order your body and neck or did you buy 'showcase' pieces?

What's your opinion of the quality/workmanship? As you know, I'm not painting my DM Spitfire strat - and I know next to nothing about paint, but it appeared to my (extremely novice) eye that out of the box, the body sure doesn't/shouldn't take much to get it ready for paint/primer/filler, etc. Thoughts?

(Looks sweet, MORE!)

Hi ORCRiST: on that, when are we going to see that Strat on the Forum, please? Is it nearly ready?

Don't tell me it's been and gone already and I missed it - I've been watching out for it carefully!

Hiya Orc. I actually just bought showcase pieces. They were exactly what i wanted. In fact the Pau Ferro fretboard was much nicer than i expected to find at the price.

Moreover Warmoth was a pleasure to deal with. I talked to a rep on the phone, just to get some questions answered, and the turn around time was very fast.

I would have to say the quality and workmanship are outstanding.

If I hadn't been planning on dying the body first i think the only prep work i would have done would have been to round the edges of the routed areas a bit (which I did, pickup cavities, control route.)

I used a water based dye so that was why i went through the whole whiskering process. In my opinion the body would have been paint ready if not for that. i would just have cleaned it.

The dimensions seem pretty much spot on. There were a couple very minor issues, when i cleaned it some stamp marks became evident. You could clearly read numbers. had I have been planning a burst I would not have been happy. On the heel, right at the join under the neck route was a nice sized filler patch. It was no big deal, unless I had been going for a natural finish, but it probably should have been mentioned in the description, it was definitely big enough to notice.

The neck however appears nearly flawless. Only a very very small bit of tearout on one tuner hole. I mean small. They dip their necks in a thin sealer, so it is in fact ready to finish. One thing I will say, it has some flame to it, that wasn't apparent in the photos when i bought it. A pleasant surprise.

All in all, 8.5 out of 10 I would say. 10 out of 10 on value (maybe 11 out of 10. i would say you'd be hard pressed to find a production guitar from any company at that kind of price point, even factoring in price of paint, that was as nice as this.

Ceri, yes never fear. Unfortunetly I'm still waiting on the body.

Twelvebar inquired the same in another thread:
http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... hp?t=43348

This is the build thread I have going on over at the Warmoth forums, still waiting on the body - but this covers some other detail work:

You're still waiting Orc?!!?

Wow. The guy doing it for you obviously does very nice work, but it would seem he has sort of earned his reputation for dawdling.

I can't wait to see it all assembled.

Cheers mate, all in good time. :)

I went with the Blackstar HT-5 head and minicab. I LOVE it.
Can't wait to pair it with my DM strat and its DiMarzio Super Dist.,
My other guitars all have EMG's - and while I love them, I think
the Super Dist. will help overdrive my new tube amp nicely.

I know. I wished I lived in jolly old Blighty so I could have say, Ceri assemble everything. I think I'll have to find (and pay) someone local to assemble and set it up as honestly - I just don't trust myself to do it. I've put so much money into every aspect - I can't afford to mess up anything.
:(
