just wondering if someone has a recommendation for locking tuners in terms of brand/make: Fender vs. any other, such as Schaller for example. Thanks for your help.

It depends on whether you want to drill the tuner holes bigger or not. I believe that the Fender Locking Tuners will drop right in, whereas other brands may require drilling the holes bigger. Remove one of your tuners and measure the hole, (11/32 inch?). And check the new tuners required hole size, which is usually listed. Also, do a search on this forum for locking tuners, it has been around a few times. :)

Hi zomerex: first thing you need to do is check your peghole size. Though there are slight variations essentially there are two sizes: 11/32" are often called "vintage" pegholes and are mostly found on reissue type instruments. 13/32" pegholes are more commonly refered to as 10mm holes and are frequently known as the "modern" size.

Whether manufactured by Schaller or not Fender-type locking tuners fit the 13/32" / 10mm holes. So do Sperzels, which are also good ones to go with. And Grover locking Rotomatics, Gotoh mini 510 locking tuners and Planet Waves Auto-Trims also all fit those 10 mil holes.

If your pegholes turn out to be the "vintage" 11/32" size then your options are either to enlarge the holes, which is easy to attempt but difficult to do well and accurately without a "cello peghole reamer" (which is rather expensive): or to buy Gotoh vintage style tuners with locking posts. To save searching, here they are:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guit ... yword=1954

Many of the above mentioned tuners have different arrangements of screws or pins to locate them, some of which necessitate drilling small new screw holes in your headstock. Too much to list all the variations here, but any decent website selling them (like Stew-Mac's, above) will show a diagram of the fixings to give you guidance.

Good luck - C

I have 2 sets of locking tuners. 1 set of "F" chrome Fender/Schaller locking tuners and 1 brushed nickel Schaller locking tuners. I love the Schaller brand because they are heavier, the locks are more sturdy and in my opinion built a little better. The Fender/Schaller ones are ok and I love the "F" on the back of them, but feel cheaper than the others.

I thought I had read somewhere that the locking tuners Fender uses now with the "F" on them were made by Ping instead of Schaller. I know the change happened while Schaller was briefly not in operation after the owner died (evidently Schaller was family owned instead of being set up as a corporation, and in Germany family-owned companies have to shut down until they go through the equivalent of USA probate court to settle the inherited ownership). Were your tuners marked as made by Schaller?

I have read the same thing, but they were sold as "fender/schaller" at the time I bought them. Those were made in Indonesia, while my "schaller" were made in Germany They are not bad tuners, just not as heavy. They are great looking and work. I love both sets.

I am about to buy a new neck from Warmoth for my Frankestein Tele. What size holes do I need to have pre-drilled for the new neck if I'm going to drop genuine Fender Locking tuners for Strat/Tele? 11/32? 13/32?, etc. I can't find the specifications for those tuners anywhere.

And since it's Christmas, let's be accurate. It's a 10mm hole, not 9.92mm (25/64").
