Prior to the Strat's development, players complained to Leo Fender that the Tele's were uncomfortable, that the edge of the guitar dug into thier forarms. Hence, the beveled body and the contours. In addition, Leo added the third pickup to make the Strat more sonically versatile.

contour?!?! who needs it. i mean come on if that is the only reason you pick one over the other then you are not looking at the guitars for the right reason..... like i said earlier 85-90% of your tone comes from your hands, so it dont matter what fender you play just play a fender!!!

I have to agree with Pennyrock. I own a tele and a strat and they are both different. My teleis my main axe b/c my strat is old and needs some repair. But I am getting an American Deluxe strat so i can be versatile in my band. My other guitar player switches between a Les Paul and a Paul Reed Smith when we play out. I have also found that the tele mixes well with both of his guitars. We do play through different amps too. So your sound can be different with different amps too. My tele sounds good through his marshall amp, but I prefer my hot rod deluxe.

I love my tele.. But I am wanting a strat really bad. I say if you truly love fender guitars, Get BOTH! GET BOTH!!!!! They are both worth having. I am sure Greg Koch would agree with me.

I'm up to 3 Strats. I sometime feel I should have 1 Tele by now

I have a Squier Tele, But I Loaned it to a young friend of mine, and I may sell it. So I don't count it.

I have a '52 Tele and an '88 Strat Plus, luv em both. Yeh the Strat has more tonal variation but it's horses for courses. They are both brilliant. My tele has a faster neck than my strat but still it all comes down to personal taste. Don't think it's easy to say ones better than the other, not really just differant. The real question is do you prefer Fenders to Gibsons? If so why?

I prefer Fenders. And here is why. I have always loved the look of a Les Paul. It just looks like a Bad @#$ guitar. And it sounds great. But as far as my preference is, I go with a Fender. The gibson (Les Paul) is a heavy guitar. And I dont especially like the string height down at the neck pickup. The Fender is lightweight without losing its tone and the action is very comfortable to me.

Tele's have a thinner sound than Strats. Strats > Teles.
In fact, I'd rather have a Les Paul than a Tele.
