Other...

I hate the vintage noiseless pickups (or at least the older ones). I had them in my Clapton Strat for a while, and while they work for overdriven tones, the clean tones seem to suffer from a really spikey tone... I promptly bought some Kinman pickups and was far happier. Although judging how the dimebucker was a choice on the poll, I'm assuming you don't play the same music I do...

I used to be a fan of humbuckers, but after getting my Epiphone Elitist Casino, I fell in love with the brilliant, warm sound of P-90s.

I bought a pre-upgraded Hwy One about 2 months ago. The pickups had a nice clean tone, but they were really weak, especially for overdriven or distorted tones. I put some Vintage Noiseless pickups in, along with the new pots that came with them, and I couldn't be happier. They are not extreme in any way, just a beautiful, natural Strat tone. They are also super quiet. I love the tone I get with my Hwy One Strat played through my Deluxe Reverb RI.

I think single coils can be more versatile than humbuckers. Even split-coil humbuckers don't sound quite the same as real single coils.

I'd have to agree with that.

If you are looking for a true hand wound vintage strat tone, then try the copperhead pickups. Hand wound to vintage specs. I have a set of 59's that are just incredible!! and are only $135 a set!!! check out copperheadpickups.com and send Jeff an email. True vintage sound and an excellent guy to deal with. Happy new year everyone!!!!!!!!!!

Sincerely:

Paul Stanley.

Do you get a commision from copperhead? Do you work there? I've seen this post twice today. Seems a bit spammy.

I have quite a few guitars and like different pickups for different sounds. I have EMGs, DiMarzios, Seymour Duncan, and also use stock pickups. Each has their own sound. I tend to like a clean sound from my single coils, and a more heavy, crunchy sound from my humbuckers. My favorite Strat has EMG SA active single coils, which I love. My Les Paul Custom has a S.D. SH-4 Jeff Beck humbucker in the bridge position, and my LP Standard has a DiMarzio Norton in it's bridge position. Both sound great, but different. pickups are relatively cheap, so experiment with different ones.
I think the HSS format is my favorite for a wide range of sounds for one axe.

I tend to stick to 3 types of pups:

Single coils on my EJ, Burstbucker Pro's on my LP and P90's (very crunchy!) in my 335. That about covers all the bases.

Neither is better then the other because they are designed to do different things.

I'm going to have to say Humbucker, they have the tone for the style of music I prefer to play.
