I used to know a guy who owned 6 or so. I think he sold them all. Did they ever make bowling ball basses?

According to the V.G. Price Guide they're worth between $2,400&$3,000. Since theey were only made from 83/84 there isn't a whole lot of them out there. They only had 1 each of tone and volume controls and the jack was on the pickguard.

Looking at these, I think they look real wild and cool. I gotta wonder, tho -- Why would they put the jack on the pick guard and why no trem or string-thru-body features?

The two-knob, top mount trem, jack on the pickguard is the standard configuration for the 83-85 "Standard Stratocaster." I think this was mainly for cost cutting in the last days of CBS.

Top mount the trem and you don't have to route for it. Put the jack on the pickguard and you can get rid of a knob, a pot, some wiring, and the receptacle and routing for the top mount jack. Can't have amounted to a whole lot of savings per guitar, but these are just the kind of beans CBS liked to count.

I remember when these were new and Quigley Music here in KC had some of the "bowling ball" Strats, two or three of them, that hung on the wall for literally years.

Wish I could go back and get those now!

They had a multicolor marble-like finish (kind of like the swirl Ibanez models).

Here's some info:

Thanks for the picture mate. I've only seen one like this once before. As others have said, they're quite rare.

Wow....
I know this is an old post but.
Quigleys had two of them a red one and a blue one. the red one actualy came from the factory with alembic pickups in it. The blue one I am the person who bought it. I am the original owner and I still own it. Its not in the greatest shape anymore and might need some work, It has been sitting in Kansas city for the last 7 years hanging on a wall at a relatives house. When I was 16 (when I bought it) I had it modified like an idiot. 16 year old I was. I had the body routed to fit a humbucker and had EMGs put in it (HSS) they are still in it. But the person who routed it took off too much wood and it developed a hairline crack from teh string tension. the result was that it was very hard for it to even stay in tune.

My cousin who has had it on the wall (I didnt even know he had it until about three days ago I had thought he had a different parts caster of mine) told me that he was able to fix it with epoxy and fibergalss to give it more stability. He will be shipping it to me soon so I will see. I sure hope that it is indeed playable again.

In addition again being a 16 year old I had the neck shaved becuase I wanted "a jackson feel" and so they did. In hind sight of course I wish I had never made those modifications but it is what it is and that is currently the state of where the blue one from Quigleys is today.

(I think i even remember the name of the guy at the store that sold it to me. His name was Doug tall thin guy with glasses really nice)

Only pic I even have of it right now is below from when I was in Uni

Are you sure it wasn't Mike that sold it to you? Tall thin guy with glasses and kind of shaggy hair? There was a Doug at Quigley's, but he was older than Mike and shorter and had a moustache.

That's amazing to think that you own that guitar that I saw all those years ago and really cool you have a pic of you playing it back in the day.

There was no way you could have known then what collector's items these would be. And everybody wanted a "hot rod" Strat.

When you get it back, definitely post pics!

I think you are right. Now that you mention it I do remember a Mike. In any event it was the tall thin guy with glasses. He was a really really super nice guy.
I assure you there will be many many pics to come once it gets back here but it will be several weeks at the least. I live in Tokyo now so it will take some additional time to get it here but once here, yes I will post alot of pics inside and out.

That is pretty cool though that someone else, somewhat at random was able to know that exact guitar I have and stranger still that I came across this thread. very cool.

Boof.
