Happy New Year everyone! New member here and brand new Strat owner. I'm a beginning guitarist and after a lot of shopping and numerous recommendations, I chose a Standard HSS. Through the research in which I've done, the only complaint I can discover with this model is keeping the guitar in tune when using the trem. A veteran player and friend of mine suggested better strings... are the "stock" superbullets not a high quality set of strings? Are there other mods that can be made at an affordable price that can correct this minor problem??
Thanks in advance for any advice!

I have a MIM standard strat with the H/S/S setup. After buying the guitar I brought it in to have it setup. I had it changed to D'Adarrio 10's on the strings, added an extra spring and replaced the stock nut with a graphite nut.

I do not go nuts on the tremolo, but when I do use it, it stays in tune.

I also had the luthier mod the bridge tone pot so it controls the middle pickup also. Not that it has an effect on staying in tune. Just a nice mod.

thanx for the info dkals... I'm sure at some point or the other I will be modifying mine as well. I'm not big on the wammy either for the most part, but my 10 year old son loves it! I've only been playing for about seven months now, and somehow my son has progressed much more than I have in just four months... imagine that!!! The tuning is a minor problem in which I can deal with for the time being. all in all, I LOVE THIS GUITAR!!!!

thanks again for the input!

Thats funny. I have been playing 7 months also. My son is 5 thank god, so he can't surpass me yet. But that will change. My daughter is 3 so I leave the whammy bar off most of the time or she would have the entire tremolo system in pieces.

Hi and "Heavy new year" too!! Click on "Support" in the headline of this page, then on "Setup guides" and finally on "Stratocaster", you'll find a lot of helpful info and adjustment hints there.

Cheers!

I have a couple of things I do to my Strat tremelo to help with tuning problems. I make sure I have enough string winds on the tuner post to give it the proper angle over the nut. I also use graphite on the nut and bridge saddle to eliminate binding at those points. A little bit of 3in1 oil applied sparingly to all tremelo friction points also helps. You can use Chapstick or vasaline on the string trees to avoid friction there also. Use a Q-tip to apply a tiny bit to the underside of the string tree. I think the 2-pt trem stays in tune better than the vintage 6 screw trem.

thanks again for all the information! I think part of the problem was that the guitar was just brand new and needed to be broken in cuz it seems to be holding tune much better. I'm very satisfied that I chose this model... awesome guitar for the money!!! very fun to play.

If you experience tuning problems with it in the future. Try tightening down your tremolo claw (use all five springs if you haven't already), it'll take a little more pressure to push it down, but I guarantee you it will help hold it's tune better.
