Fender is getting a little carried away with signature models. Seems if you have ever played one, you get one.

Need proof? John Mayer.

1. Legal issues.

2. Hendrix played tons of production model Strats. No major and/or unique modifications. He didn't have a favorite guitar, and most artist signatures are based on that particular artist's #1. I don't think he really cared what guitar he played, he just played.

Funny enough the only Hendrix sig Strat was a Gibson, and that died before it even made it to the stores.

Fender had two in the late 1990s/early 2000s, but the relationship was not renewed by the Hendrix estate after the first contract expired (it was either a 4 or a 5 year deal).

The Hendrix Signature was actually a left-handed 1968/69 style Strat that was reversed and strung up for a right-handed player (since Jimi played RH Strats strung up for a lefty); these even had a mirror-image logo and came with a period-correct case, ACE strap and coiled cord.

The other model was the Hendrix Voodoo Strat - it had a reversed headstock and reverse-staggered pickups (the bridge pickup was also at a reverse angle) on a right-handed body. Same accessories.

When the deal with the Hendrix estate expired the Signature model ended but the VooDoo model continued for a couple more years as the "1968 Reverse Strat Special".

Formite mthomps07 just posted that he picked up a 3rd VooDoo Strat in this thread:

I made my own Jimi Hendrix Strats the first was a lefty 78 sunburst with a maple fretboard that I strung right handed the second an '00 MIM lefty black with a rosewood board-a mirror image of the one he played at Monterey before switching to the "sacrifice"one.Although your access to the upper frets is restricted, having the whammy and controls up top greatly improves your ability to do Jimi type things. With the whammy up top you can use the bar to dive while doing hammer ons like in Machine Gun-can't be done on a right hand Strat. With the pup control up top you can switch pups with your forearm while picking and not miss a beat or note.Since Janie hendrix has complete control over anything to do with the use of Jimi's name or image she has all the say-so about a Jimi Strat and since the Gibson/Jimi/Strat fiasco I would think that she would be very wary about taking on another venture like that-at least not for a long time. Maybe Fender could make a Fender/Jimi/Flying V or SG I mean Gibson started the precedent by making a Gibson Strat and what's good for the goose......

There is a great book published, the title is I believe "Hendrix's Gear".
What is fascinating is the collection that he used, from Fender Mustangs to Gibson Flying Vee's etc...etc.

I don't believe it made that much of a difference as to what he played, Hendrix had such a unique signature that you did/do not have to know who is playing, his sound is so recognizable.

I'm not a Hendrix fan, but his approach demanded the listener's respect.
As well as it's without saying, how did he do that sound ???
It is nevertheless always fun to listen to a musician who's approach is outside of the matrix..

Thats not really fair, if you are gonna call out anybody why not Tom Delonge? He had both a Squier and Fender Sig and John Mayer is a much better player than Tom Delonge.
