You should be fine; that was a noted Fender serial number screw-up back in 1991. Instead of using "N1XXXXX" serial numbers after the "N0XXXXX" they accidentally used some "N9XXXXX" serial numbers before getting back to the "N2XXXXX" serial numbers. Without a photo I'm assuming the headstock decal is silver with a black outline and the serial number is on the front of the headstock.

By 1999 Fender was using a different headstock logo (having gone back to the "spaghetti" logo) and had moved the serial number to the back of the headstock.

Actually I did some more reading and that use of N9XXXXX serial numbers occurred in both 1990 and 1991. Fender serial numbers have never been a 100% accurate way to date a guitar. Here are some noted deviations between the serial number year and the actual year:

CBS/Fender used "S9XXXXX" decals on Strats from 1979 up through 1981.

CBS/Fender used "E3XXXXX" decals on both 2-knob Standards and Elites in both 1983 and 1984.

FMIC/Fender used "E4XXXXX" decals on American Standard Strats from their introduction in late 1986 fairly well into 1988.

FMIC/Fender used "N9XXXXX" decals in 1990/1991 intead of "N0XXXXX" or "N1XXXXX".

And then you have the "early production/pre-introduction" guitars - I had a 2004 American Deluxe V-neck Strat (a model introduced in January 2004) that had a DZ3XXXXXX" serial number because it was built at the end of 2003 so it was ready to ship immediately after the January 2004 NAMM show.

The current 2010 American Deluxes were introduced in March 2010, but the first of them had "DZ9XXXXXX" serial numbers because they first batches were produced in late 2009.
